Fish Pono And we all fish pono.

We’re a growing ʻohana of ocean-lovers, scientists, watermen and women, and yes, fisher people, who care about our Hawaiian Islands, the culture, and the reefs that surround them.

🐠📣 BIG SHOUTOUT to for putting together such an informative and important resource on Fish Rest Areas (FRAs) for Hawaiʻi!

We’re resharing their content because understanding why these areas matter — and how they support healthy fish populations, thriving reefs, and pono fishing practices — is something we should all be talking about.

Mahalo, , for helping make this information accessible and keeping the conversation going.

👉🏽 Check out their full resource on their website to learn more about Fish Rest Areas in Hawaiʻi!

Fish Pono represented at World Manta Day!

Fish Pono Ambassador, Chris Christopher Funada, enjoyed talking with fishers young and old about what fishing Pono means and how protecting herbivores is part of responsible fishing practices.

Mac Poepoe has spent his life fishing these waters and leading his community with the kind of wisdom that gets passed down — not written in textbooks.

It's not enough to just take less. The real practice is learning how to restore what we use.

Mahalo Mac for being one of our newest Fish Pono Ambassadors!

Grateful to have so many opportunities to share our knowledge and connect with the community!

Living in Hawaiʻi is a privilege. And Kawai Hong has never taken that lightly.

As a fisher and seafood chef, Kawai understands these waters from every angle and we are so thrilled to welcome him as a Fish Pono Ambassador. His kuleana doesn't stop at the shoreline; it carries all the way to the table.

Our reefs, our fight.
This week, while ocean advocates from across the country came together in Washington, D.C. for Capitol Hill Ocean Week, Congress was busy trying to gut protections for our Marine National Monuments.
H.R. 8904, introduced by Congresswoman Radewagen (R-American Samoa), would open these sacred, thriving waters to commercial fishing and tie the hands of future generations who want to protect them. These monuments aren't just lines on a map — they're some of the last truly wild ocean ecosystems left on Earth.
Thankfully, our waters had a voice in that room. Dr. Alan Friedlander — retired Chief Scientist with National Geographic Pristine Seas and a Steering Committee member of the Pacific Islands Heritage Coalition — testified as the minority witness, standing up for the science and the story of these extraordinary places.
We owe him, and everyone fighting for these waters, our gratitude. 🙏

Our reefs can't testify for themselves. That's why we show up for them. Stay loud, stay informed, and keep fighting for pono waters. 🐟✊

What’s in your freezer?

Shoutout to Chris for breaking down why being selective actually matters — herbivorous fish managing algae, keeping coral alive… ensuring a healthier reef and more fish for future generations!

Some stories are best shared around the table.

We're excited to celebrate Kimi —sister of Fish Pono Scientific Advisor and Ambassador Dr. Randy Kosaki—on the release of her beautiful new cookbook featuring Hawaiʻi seafood recipes inspired by family, culture, and a deep connection to the ocean.

More than a collection of recipes, this book is a reminder that the choices we make as consumers can help support local fishermen, sustainable seafood, and the health of our marine ecosystems.

Congratulations, Kimi, on this incredible accomplishment. We can't wait to see these stories and flavors shared in homes across Hawaiʻi and beyond.
