WE’RE CELEBRATING 50 YEARS!

50 YEARS OF BUILDING COMMUNITY, PROTECTING WAI & ʻĀINA

For five decades, Sierra Club Maui Group has worked alongside our community to protect Maui’s forests, streams, coastlines, wildlife, and the places we all love. Now it’s time to celebrate!

Join us for an afternoon of music, food, community, and conservation as we honor the people and partnerships that have shaped our first 50 years—and look ahead to the next 50.

🌲 Sierra Club Maui members: Love Makawao Forest? Come help us get it reopened.

Hurricane Lala severely impacted Makawao Forest and the Kahakapao Recreation Area, and the park remains closed while the State works through the recovery.

For many of us, this is more than just a park. It’s where we hike, bike, run, ride horses, walk with our families, connect with the forest, and volunteer to care for the trails. It’s also one of the most-used recreation areas on Maui.

A community meeting is happening this Saturday to bring together the people and groups who love and use this special place.

The goal: figure out how our community can help the State with recovery efforts and support getting Makawao Forest safely reopened as soon as possible.

If you’re part of the Sierra Club Maui community — especially our Kahakapao Krew volunteers — we’d love to see you there. Come share ideas, offer resources, make connections, and see what we can accomplish together.

💧 REMEMBERING WAI: FILM SCREENING + COMMUNITY PANEL

What happens when the wai stops flowing from mauka to makai?

Join us for a screening of “Remembering Wai,” by local filmmaker De Andre Makakoa exploring the vital connection between healthy streamflow, ʻāina, and our communities.

The film weaves together ʻike kūpuna, lived experience, ecological science, and contemporary conflicts over water to tell a powerful story of water extraction, stewardship, destruction, and restoration—and examines the lasting impacts of stream diversions on Maui’s ʻāina and people.

WE DID IT! D-7 WAS DENIED! 🎉💧
Huge mahalo to everyone who showed up, spoke out, and submitted written testimony! Today proved that when the community comes together to protect our public trust resources, our collective voice cannot be ignored.
From honoring wai as a sacred living entity to upholding Article XI of Hawaii’s Constitution, every single testimony highlighted why our water belongs in public hands—not private corporate control.
This victory is a massive step forward for stream restoration, kalo farmers, local communities, and the path toward true public stewardship under the East Maui Water Authority.
Thank you to all the kiaʻi, community advocates, and families who put in the work to make this happen. The journey for long-term water justice continues, but today, we celebrate PEOPLE POWER! 🌺🙌

Water is a public trust, not a corporate asset. 💧

As the State deliberates long-term water licenses for East Maui, we must remember that wai was never meant to be owned or commodity-driven. It is a living entity enshrined in Hawaii’s Constitution to be protected for future generations.

The argument that a public authority lacks the ability to manage this system falls apart when you look at the facts: EMI relies on a threadbare crew of around 5 field workers for 74 miles of infrastructure. Maui County and the East Maui Water Authority have the resources, public backing, and legal duty to steward this system fairly and transparently.

💧 WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE. YOU KNOW THE DRILL.

Once again, we’re asking you to speak up for East Maui’s wai.

On Friday, August 14, the BLNR will consider a proposed 30-year water license that could allow Mahi Pono to divert up to 88 million gallons of East Maui stream water every day.

We’ve been fighting for East Maui’s streams for years. We’ve won important protections, forced accountability, and secured hard-fought victories in court. Now we’re back asking for your testimony again.

Because this is bigger than one permit or one corporation.

💧 East Maui’s water is a public trust.
💧 Maui voters have already chosen a path toward public management.
💧 Mahi Pono should be a water customer—not the water manager.
💧 A 30-year license should not be decided before the facts about water availability, waste, stream health, and public trust needs are fully examined.
