Historic District Commission (HDC) member Brianna Candelaria has chosen the Sherrick House at Antietam National Battlefield as her favorite historic resource for Preservation Month this year. "As an architectural historian I love the stories that houses can tell. The Sherrick House has an incredible history, including its involvement during the Battle of Antietam. Imagine the stories this house could tell!"
Brianna has been on the HDC since 2022 and she has a Masters of Historic Preservation from University of Maryland. She was also a former National Lead for Interpretation with the Bureau of Land Management.

Keller House in Funkstown

Keller House in Funkstown

Historic District Commission (HDC) member Greg Smith shares his pick for Preservation. "The Keller House on the main street of Funkstown was built in 1825, and served as a field hospital during the Civil War. Today it is a good example of a property that has developed a good relationship with its owner and is in the process of receiving attention.

It is important for historic buildings to continue having a life; that is, to maintain relationships with people who are actually inside doing normal things. A few structures, of course, can find some purpose as museums. But for most, it is necessary to have real-life activity to give the building its vibrancy, and to give it the day-to-day maintenance and movement it needs.

The HDC tries to encourage these relationships between properties and owners. The most tangible way we do this is the recently expanded tax credit program which can help fund maintenance and upgrades."

Historic District Commission member Ann Aldrich shares a very near and dear restoration for her Preservation Month highlight.

"Hockman Hall was built in 1803 on a road from Bowman’s Mill to mills to the south. The road was abandoned in the 1850’s thought the remnant still exists in Little Valley, which still retains much of its integrity from the early settlement era of Washington County. We purchased the property to restore the house and land for the coming century."

You might know Ann, a board member of the Washington County Historical Trust of Maryland, for her work with another prominent stone house, the Saylor House in Kiwanis Park.

From Ms. Unsworth ... "The Miller House Museum is a wonderful example of a Federal-style townhouse. It was built by Hagerstown lawyer William Price in 1825. After the Price, Neill, and Miller families lived in the home, the home became the headquarters of the Washington County Historical Society (WCHS) in 1966. It is still the home of WCHS and should be toured by anyone interested in our local history. Tours of the Miller House are available on Fridays at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 PM, or throughout the week by appointment.”
