Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a pivotal day in American history commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the news of emancipation finally reached Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Hospice of Washington County honors the African American community's resilience, strength, and enduring spirit. Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our past, celebrate progress, and commit to the ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Juneteenth is not only a day of celebration of freedom, but also one of opportunity, equity and access. It is an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible – and there is still so much work to do.

Melanie Shippie, a hospice nurse with Hospice of Washington County, was selected as a Community Hero and threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Flying Boxcars game on Wednesday, June 17.

Her compassionate, patient-centered care and extensive experience in sub-acute, critical, cardiac, and emergency nursing—along with her ASN from Carroll Community College and BSN from Frostburg State University—reflected a deep commitment to excellence in healthcare. Inspired by her family and personal life experiences, she brought empathy, warmth, and dedication to patients and families, whether in home care or at Doey’s House.

We were proud to recognize her as a true example of community-focused nursing.

Hospice of Washington County’s Bereavement Team recently hosted our annual DoveTales Camp and welcomed 30 amazing campers, 19 adult volunteers who served as Big Buddies and support staff, and 11 HWC staff for a day of healing, connection, and hope. This special program gives children a safe space to share their stories and connect with others who understand their journey. An additional 23 campers were not able to join in person this year, but will be receiving their personalized camp bags to complete all of their activities at home! Thank you to WCPS Claud E. Kitchens Outdoor School at Fairview for hosting DoveTales and to our generous donors—your support makes this meaningful experience possible! On this day in 1775, the Second Continental Congress created a unified colonial force, marking the birth of the U.S. Army. For 251 years, brave men and women have defended our freedom, upholding life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
