Pressley Ridge Washington County Diversion Program Mentoring Initiative

Pressley Ridge Washington County Diversion Program Mentoring Initiative Pressley Ridge Washington County Diversion Program Mentoring Initiative increases mentoring opportunities for at-risk youth in Maryland.

The Department of Juvenile Services screen police reports as they come in and forward any first time non-violent offenders to the Diversion Program. A Diversion case manager is assigned and provides the following services: a Risks and Needs Screening; linkage to community resources; referrals to juvenile offender programs; regular monitoring; and follow-up to address additional concerns before clo

sing the case. The Washington County Diversion Program has established a list of consequences that vary according to the offense. Youth may be assigned any one or more of the following: community service hours, written apology, essay of understanding, educational group (determined by the offense committed), drug/alcohol screening at the local Health Department, mental health evaluation/treatment, restitution, and no contact with the alleged victim. The maximum consequences for a drug paraphernalia charge through the Diversion program would be: 40 hours community service, a screening/evaluation at the local Health Department, and to attend the drug education group offered through our office. Youth who are involved in the Child in Need of Supervision (CINS) program are voluntarily refereed by their guardians. Youth are screened to qualify and assigned Case Managers for 6-12 months. There is no payment for these services therefor any family regardless of socio-economic status can utilize the CINS program. The family develops a treatment plan centered on their strengths and challenges. The Case Manger works with the family to achieve goals, access community resources and develop protective factors. Youth involved in either the CINS or Diversion programs are offered mentors; they volunteer to engage in mentoring relationships. They are then screened, trained and matched.

Collected books will used for the Hagerstown Rotary Literacy Initiative, a community effort to improve early childhood literacy in Washington County. Books will be distributed throughout the community where they will have the greatest impact on at-risk children. Your book will help a child learn to read. Your book could be the first book a child has ever owned!
