Club History: Organized January 14, 1915 - Chartered June 1, 1915, Hagerstown Rotary Club follows the important motto of Service Above Self and believes in the importance of giving back to the community we live and work in. Through the development of fundraisers over the years, donations, and countless hours donated by the members, we are able to give back thousands and thousands of dollars through grants to community organizations.

• Rotarians are adults of good character and good business or professional reputation.

• Rotary is a service club. It is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Becoming a Rotarian gives you the richly rewarding opportunity to do something for somebody else. Membership in a Rotary club makes you a better community citizen and consists of the most active citizens of their communities. These communities span
all around the world with over 33,000 clubs in over 200 nations and geographical regions.

• As a Rotarian you have the opportunity to serve by volunteering locally, regionally, and globally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace and eradicate polio under the motto “Service Above Self”.

• One of the most basic human needs is that of friendship and fellowship. It is one of the important reasons why Rotary began in 1905.

• Business Development and networking was the second original reason for the beginning of Rotary. Everyone needs to network and Rotary consists of a cross section of every business community with members from all walks of life. They are leaders of business and various professions from art, government & military, religion, all disciplines and the professions. Rotary develops confidence as well as public speaking skills in its Rotarians through its networking and public communication opportunities.

• FUN: The service, social aspects and club projects are fun and enjoyable. Who wouldn’t want to have the opportunity to have fun, network, build lasting relationships and serve their community?!?!

Today, the Hagerstown Rotary Club welcomed Sila Alegra-Bartel from the Sunrise Rotary-Hagerstown who shared an inspiring presentation about the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP), an international Rotary service project working alongside the nonprofit organization Cooperative for Education (CoEd), making a lasting difference in the lives of children.

Since 1997, more than 900 Rotary clubs across 90 districts have worked together to improve educational opportunities for underserved students in Guatemala. Through four sustainable programs focused on literacy, technology, and educational support, GLP has helped nearly 330,000 students!

With 1 in 3 people in Guatemala unable to read or write, access to quality education remains a significant challenge. The Guatemala Literacy Project is working to change that by giving students the tools and opportunities they need to build brighter futures.

Rotarians can support this incredible initiative by contributing to global grants, sponsoring students, volunteering, or even traveling to Guatemala to see the project's impact firsthand.

Join the Hagerstown Rotary Club on Wednesday, October 21st, at noon at Morris Frock for a special meeting supporting Rotary’s mission to eradicate polio worldwide!

We'll be participating in Rotary’s World’s Greatest Meal to Help End Polio, a global initiative bringing Rotarians together to raise funds and awareness for polio eradication.

Members who are able are encouraged to contribute an additional $15 toward their meal ($30 total). The extra $15 will go toward Rotary's efforts to end polio and count toward each member's Paul Harris Fellow contributions.

Jason’s interest in technology began early. He has been working with computers since the third grade and has now spent more than 20 years in the IT industry. As the founder of Innovative, Jason has helped grow the company while shifting his focus toward higher-level strategy, organizational growth, and helping clients use technology to achieve their goals.

For Jason, technology is only part of the equation. Relationships are at the heart of his work. He believes businesses should be able to rely on their technology partner just as they would a trusted attorney, insurance agent, banker, or accountant. His passion is connecting with people, understanding their goals, and finding ways to add value while taking the worry out of technology.

Our impact reaches far beyond Washington County.

At the Hagerstown Rotary Club, we are proud of the work our members do right here at home, but being a Rotarian also means being part of something much bigger.

For decades, Rotary International has led the global fight to End Polio, working alongside partners around the world to protect children from this devastating disease.

Each year, more than 400 million children are immunized against polio through global eradication efforts. Together, Rotary and its partners have helped reduce polio cases worldwide by 99.9 percent, bringing us closer than ever to a polio free world.

When you support Rotary, you are supporting service that stretches from our neighbors here in Washington County to children and families across the globe.

Because Service Above Self has no borders.

Service Above Self was in action yesterday at Rotary Park!

Members of the Hagerstown Rotary Club proudly joined more than 1,100 volunteers from across Washington County for the 35th Annual United Way of Washington County, Maryland Day of Caring, our community’s largest annual single-day service effort.

Each year, the Day of Caring brings together businesses, organizations, and volunteers to make a meaningful difference for some of our community’s most vulnerable residents, including individuals with disabilities, families with limited incomes, veterans, and older adults. Volunteers also lend a hand to local nonprofit organizations, completing projects that improve safety, accessibility, organization, maintenance, and beautification.

For our Rotary members, it was another opportunity to put our Club’s mission into action. We believe in serving others, strengthening our community, and working alongside our neighbors to create lasting impact.

We are grateful to United Way of Washington County for bringing our community together for 35 years of service and to every volunteer who rolled up their sleeves yesterday to make Washington County a better place to call home.

Service Above Self isn’t just something we say. It’s something we do.

We enjoyed welcoming District Governor Sean Murtagh to our Rotary meeting yesterday!

Sean shared updates from across our district, reflections on Rotary, and some of the core messaging from Rotary International President Olayinka H. Babalola centered around this year’s call to “Create Lasting Impact.”

One message especially resonated: before we can change the world, we have to be willing to grow and change ourselves. Through stronger clubs, meaningful fellowship, and service rooted in purpose, we can create an impact that continues long after a project or meeting ends.

That impact can be felt across the globe, throughout our communities, and within ourselves.

Thank you, Sean, for spending time with us and reminding us why we choose to be Rotarians: to serve, to connect, and to create lasting impact.

We’re looking forward to a special Rotary meeting this week!

Join us tomorrow Wednesday, September 16th at noon at Morris Frock American Legion as we welcome District Governor Sean Murtagh of The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown.

Sean brings an incredible background of service and leadership. A retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain, he served more than 30 years on active duty in a variety of operational and command positions. Since retiring from the military, he has continued serving others through his professional career, Rotary, and numerous community organizations.

A recent past president of the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown, Sean has also served as District 7360’s Innovative Club Advocate and currently serves on the board of Shepherd University’s Scarborough Society. His volunteer service has also included the Military Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery and the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County.

We are honored to welcome District Governor Murtagh and look forward to hearing from him!

Happy Labor Day from the Hagerstown Rotary Club! Today, we recognize the hard work, dedication, and contributions of workers throughout our community and across the country.

From the people who keep our businesses running and our communities strong to those who serve, teach, build, care for others, and give back, Labor Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many hands that make a difference every day.

As Rotarians, we believe in Service Above Self, and we are especially grateful for all those whose work helps make Washington County a wonderful place to live, work, and serve.

Thank you to Dr. Jacob Ashby, Executive Director of the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown for joining our Rotary Club this week and sharing more about USMH and the important work happening right here in our community.
