Lydia’s Closet

Lydia’s Closet Lydia's Closet is a clothing bank coordinated by the Lydia's Circle at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Maryland. She was trembling.

Lydia’s Circle “When did we see you?” faith stories. The idea to hand out winter clothing arose from an evening of Bible Study. (Matthew 25: 31 - 40) On the first Saturday of sharing, a young man arrived looking for a winter jacket, he then asked for his younger brother and two coats were given. Three people approached and asked, “Free?”. “Yes, free” we responded. One couple shared that they were

living in a tent and had lost their heater. They bundled up in coats, hats, and scarves. A man rode up on a bike and selected a coat. He talked with great fondness of visiting St. John’s for holiday meals and social events. Someone had donated a beautiful long black coat. We called it “the lawyer jacket”. Later in the morning, an older woman, underdressed for the weather, arrived. The “lawyer jacket” was a perfect fit and warmed her immediately. Approximately 50 winter clothing items were distributed on that day. On the second Saturday of sharing, there were also many wonderfully warm clothing donations. They were distributed at a rapid pace. One last man stopped by and there was one warm jacket left. Sandy smiled and shared that it had been her father-in-law’s jacket and it was a blessing to see it purposefully used in this way. Thank you to everyone for donations and prayers as, in the name of Jesus, we care for one another and the community.
