Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Fund

Jean Amy Swenson Literacy Fund This fund was started to buy books for kids in memory of Mrs. Swenson, a teacher in Amsterdam, NY. She believed that reading was the key to learning.

Jean Amy Swenson was a teacher in the Greater Amsterdam School District for 32 years. After she retired, she helped students of all ages to learn to read and get their high school diplomas. She also helped run a program where she started giving away (usually used) books to both children and adults. It is from these two things that the idea of providing books to elementary school children was born.

After she died, her family set up a fund to pay for books for kids. Our long-term goal is to raise enough to be able to buy every elementary student in Amsterdam a book of their own!
