Friends of Lake Warner & The Mill River

Friends of Lake Warner & The Mill River The Friends of Lake Warner & The Mill River is a (501c3 non-profit) community-based group dedicated to restoring and maintaining Lake Warner in Hadley, MA.

The Friends were founded to restore and conserve the beautiful historic Lake Warner millpond and dam along the Mill River in Hadley, Massachusetts. We are a not-for-profit corporation registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are currently supporting a fundraising campaign to raise funds for badly needed restoration work on the dam - one of the oldest mill sites in the United States. The Kestrel Land Trust, owner of the dam and mill (water) rights is our partner in this campaign.

We are so pleased, to once again, have one of the Valley's most well-known birders, John Green, join us this Sunday at the Lake Warner peninsula to welcome back the many birds that call Lake Warner their home.

John is a dedicated naturalist, birdwatcher, photographer, and naturalist. With over five decades of experience, John has been a prominent figure in environmental education, leading programs at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment and other organizations.
John's journey into birding began in Philadelphia, where he worked for the US Forest Service and later transferred to a field unit at UMass Amherst to conduct bird surveys1. His expertise in bird identification, calls, and migration patterns has made him a respected mentor in the birding community.

John is known for his gentle birding walks, where he shares his extensive knowledge with bird enthusiasts of all levels. He has a passion for making birding accessible and inclusive, often collaborating with groups like the Antiracist Collective of Avid Birders.

As we did last spring, we hope to create fond memories while connecting with the natural habitat of Lake Warner.

🌱 Spring is waking up at Lake Warner!
Skunk cabbage is pushing up through the wetlands, and the first wave of spring wildlife is already making an appearance. In just the past few days, visitors have spotted red‑winged blackbirds, bald eagles, osprey, and even our resident beavers hard at work along the shoreline.

These early signs remind us how alive and resilient this ecosystem is—and how lucky we are to witness its seasonal return.

If you’re out walking the peninsula or paddling on Lake Warner, keep your eyes open and share what you see. Spring is officially here on Lake Warner. 🌿🦅🦫
