What does it mean for young people to meet the world with understanding, and with the capacity to act?

At Hartsbrook, this question lives within our High School ACTS program:
Agency, Community, Terra & Social Justice.

As students grow, their awareness of the world deepens. They begin to encounter complex realities- environmental, social and human. Without meaningful ways to engage, this awareness can remain abstract, or even overwhelming.

ACTS offers a different path.

Through work on the land, students come into relationship with the natural world. Through community engagement, they experience what it means to contribute. Through reflection and conversation, they begin to form their own understanding of the world and their place within it.

In this way, learning becomes active.

Not only thinking about the world, but participating in it.

Another peek at our developing documentary! Piening Hall sits at the base of the Holyoke Mountain Range and beside the Harts Brook. Its curved edges and long windows make it a stunning sight and a very special place in which to learn and grow.

It’s May Day of Giving at Hartsbrook!

Today our whole community - past and present - comes together to carry forward something we all share.

Your support strengthens student programs at every stage of the school, deepens the work of our teachers, and helps care for the land and animals that are part of daily life here. These aren’t extras - they are part of the foundation of the Hartsbrook experience.

We’ve already raised $215,000 toward our $335,000 Annual Fund goal. What happens today will help carry us the rest of the way. In honor of our 45th year, a group of dedicated supporters is matching every gift up to $45,000 - doubling the impact of what you give.

There are also a few meaningful tokens of appreciation:

A monthly gift of $25—or a one-time gift of $245—receives a bandana featuring a topographical map of campus
A monthly gift of $45—or a one-time gift of $450—receives both a commemorative 45th anniversary tote and the bandana
A monthly gift of $100—or a one-time gift of $1,000—receives a beautiful student-made thank you card, commemorative tote, and screen-printed bandana as a token of our deep appreciation
May Day marks a turning point - a moment when what’s been nurtured begins to show itself. If Hartsbrook has been part of your life, we invite you to continue that connection by supporting what is thriving now and what is still unfolding.

Thank you for being part of this shared work.

We don’t rush reading. We develop readers.

It can feel unsettling at first.

In a world where children are often expected to read earlier and earlier, choosing not to push that timeline can raise questions.

Will my child fall behind? Are we missing a window?

What we’ve learned, through both research and decades of experience is that reading is not just an academic skill. It’s the result of many deeper capacities developing first.

Before a child becomes a confident reader, their body, language, and imagination are doing essential work.

They are:
Building vocabulary through rich, spoken language and storytelling
Developing auditory processing by hearing rhythm, rhyme, and repetition
Strengthening focus and memory through movement and play
Forming mental images, which later become the foundation for comprehension

These are not “extra” skills.

They are the groundwork that allows reading to truly take hold.

When reading is introduce before these foundations are in place, children can often learn to decode words, but without the same depth of understanding, ease, or long-term confidence.

At Hartsbrook, we take a different approach.

We give children time to develop fully so that when reading begins, it comes with:
Strong comprehension
Genuine engagement
And a send of confidence

When it clicks, it really clicks! Client don’t just learn how to read. They become readers- curious, capable, and connected to what they’re reading.

This approach requires trust.

But again and again, we see the results - not just in literacy, but in a lifelong relationship with learning.
