The National Correctional Employees Union would like to acknowledge this Memorial Day with the following message.
As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Memorial Day, the NCEU would like to honor the brave men and women of the armed forces who gave their lives in service to our nation.
Today we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and give thanks for the freedoms and liberties that their service helped preserve.
The National Correctional Employees Union wants to recognize the dedication and sacrifices placed on Correctional Officers who serve and protect our communities under difficult and demanding conditions. As a union, we remain committed to building a stronger future for our members by continuing to advocate for safer working environments, fair treatment, improved staffing, better resources, and the respect that Correctional Professionals deserve. Together, we will keep working to strengthen the conditions, protections, and support systems that help our members serve with dignity and return home safely to their families each day.

National Correctional Officers Week
May 04, 2026
Correctional Officers Week serves as a commemoration honoring the men and women currently serving in our justice system who work in obscurity in an often difficult and dangerous environment, with silence, strength, courage, and dignity. Your steadfast commitment and sacrifices do not go unnoticed. The NCEU will always have your back. Thank you for your service.

May 4, 1987

By the President of the United States of America

A Proclamation

No group of Americans has a more difficult or less publicly visible job than the brave men and women who work in our correctional facilities. Correctional officers who work in jails and prisons are currently responsible for the safety, containment, and control of more than 600,000 prisoners. Correctional officers must protect inmates from violence from fellow prisoners, while encouraging them to develop skills and attitudes that can help them become productive members of society after their release.

The general public should fully appreciate correctional officials' capable handling of the physical and emotional demands placed upon them daily. Their profession requires careful and constant vigilance, and the threat of violence is always present. At the same time, these dedicated employees try to improve the living conditions of those who are being confined.

It is appropriate that we honor the correctional officers in all our institutions, at all levels of government, for their invaluable contributions to our society.

The Congress, by Public Law 99 - 611, has designated the week beginning May 3, 1987, as ``National Correctional Officers Week'' and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of this event.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week beginning May 3, 1987, as National Correctional Officers Week. I call upon all Americans to observe this week with appropriate activities and ceremonies.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of May, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and eleventh.

Ronald Reagan

Today we want to recognize one of our own whose advocacy reminds us that union solidarity extends beyond the workplace and into our communities.

NCEU member Kraig Emery has been working tirelessly to raise awareness about Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) — supporting families, sharing education, and helping ensure that no one faces unimaginable loss alone. His efforts embody what collective action looks like at a human level: compassion, visibility, and community care.

In honor of his son, Kalahan, Kraig is organizing a 5K Awareness Run and invites all NCEU members, families, and friends to participate. All online registration fees will be donated to The SUDC Foundation.

Whether you run, walk, volunteer, or simply show up, your presence helps amplify awareness and support affected families.

Let’s show up the way union members always do — together.

ICE has taken into custody one of our brother correctional officers from York County Sheriff's Office - Maine.
