Mark April 20th on your calendar to kick off 250 years of independence with a presentation of New Jersey’s own declaration. This is just the start of a whole year full of commemorative events to mark this milestone of our nation’s history. As John Adams said;

“Liberty cannot be preserved without a general knowledge among the people, who have a right…and a desire to know; but besides this, they have a right, an indisputable, unalienable, indefeasible, divine right to the most dreaded and envied kind of knowledge.”

For 249 years and 9 months we have put forth an idea, a faith in the wisdom of the people; who have endured the challenges of history and built the place we call home today. John Adams put his faith in the people because he knew that our ambition would drive us towards success.

Jersey is no different, and the story of our own document declaring independence will be the focus of our meeting’s program. Come by and learn how your local area dealt with the big question of independence.

Due to the unfortunate weather circumstances our January 26th meeting will be cancelled for the safety and convenience of our members and attendees.

The Revolution will resume on April 20th as our planned exhibition of New Jersey’s Declaration of Independence will take place. A cancelled meeting does not mean we miss out on a great program!

Being in the lovely moderate climate of South Jersey, Haddon Heights is known by its residents and visitors to be delightful in the Spring, hot and sunny in the Summertime, cool and mild in the Fall, and of course; A sometimes blistering but nevertheless beautiful Winter wonderland.

Pictured (circa 1907) is our very own Crystal Lake. The jewel of the resort era of Haddon Heights. Residents were able to skate, sled, and no doubt play some hockey on the ice before it was drained in 1933 to create the “Haddon Lake Park” we know today. This is why if you curious locals have observed the park where King’s Run; the water source, cuts through is shaped like a big bowl.

The magic of Haddon Heights in wintertime has been enjoyed throughout the ages. Our “Dead Man’s Hill” is still a sledding destination for kids from all over. If you plan on visiting, we have historical interpretive markers situated throughout the park. Try to find our Glover Fulling Mill sign at the Dell, and the sign on the building in the background, the Hinchman House; and finally, behind the war memorial, next to the very tree in the picture, is our sign for Crystal Lake!

Stay safe, support local history, and we will see you all in April!

Happy New Year from the Haddon Heights Historical Society!

Happy 250th to the United States!

We have plenty lined up this year to celebrate that time in the course of human events it became necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another.

Our meeting on January 26th will entail New Jersey’s own story of that “dissolve”.

Discover this year the events that unraveled in your own back yard; and support local history!
