Your Voice Matters: Help Shape Agricultural Health & Safety in Connecticut!

CT RC&D in partnership with the CT Department of Agriculture, is hosting a stakeholder meeting to get input on ways farms can improve health and safety into their operations for the improvement of rural health in the state.

Join us in person or virtually to learn more about the project and give your feedback on ways you could benefit from assistance.

- All farm & aquaculture workers, farm & aquaculture owners, agricultural service providers, and partner organizations are welcome to join.

- Lunch will be provided.

You still have time to register for CIPWG’s 2026 Invasive Plant Symposium. This year's theme is "From Awareness to Action — Strengthening Our Response to Invasive Plants."

🎙The symposium will be recorded and made available after the event. Attendees can choose to attend in person or purchase the recording.

Join us for Ask the Experts, three informal virtual sessions in November, 6-7 p.m.

🌱 Nov. 10 | Soil Health on the Small Scale No-Till Organic Farm
Ask Yoko Takemura and Alex Carpenter of Assawaga Farm about: mulching, permanent beds, cover crops, compost production, and more.

🚜 Nov. 16 | Soil Health on the Tractor Scale Vegetable Farm
Ask Will Dellacamera of Cecarellis Harrison Hill Farm about: cutting tillage and tractor passes, equipment hacks for tillage reduction, and dealing with compaction on heavy clay soils.

🐄 Nov. 19 | Soil Health on Livestock Farms
Ask Jennie Kapszukiewicz and Max Breiteneicher, New England Livestock and Grazing Specialists about: managing pasture, manure, and winter feeding areas for soil health.

These are open-format conversations without presentations, and they aren't recorded, so ask freely. Come to one session or all three, and stay for the whole hour or pop in with one question. While the sessions focus on Connecticut farming conditions, farmers from any state are welcome.

Learning in the field!

On September 23, UConn Extension and Connecticut Resource Conservation & Development - CT RC&D hosted the Cover Crop Termination Event Workshop at the UConn Research Farm.

The workshop focused on practical cover crop termination strategies and management approaches. Participants toured research and demonstration plots, got a closer look at mechanical termination equipment, and shared insights on soil health practices specific to Connecticut. It was a great opportunity for farmers and agricultural service providers to connect.

FARMER FEATURE — MENA'S GARDEN

When Dr. Philomena Asante (Dr. Mena) stumbled upon an open house for an old farm in North Guilford, she fell in love with its potential. Built in 1840 and owned by the Bartlett family until 1990, the property has deep agricultural roots. The farm was called the “Insulting Manor” by its previous owner, and Mena has embraced this bit of classic New England farm humor.

By the time Mena found the 5.3-acre property, it had been neglected for eight years, with no useable kitchen or bathroom. But it did have a new electrical system, a solid metal roof, several outbuildings, and fields that Mena dreamed of planting.

There were several offers, but Mena had an advantage: she’d shared her goal of restoring the historic farmhouse and creating a flower farm. Her offer was accepted, and she got to work.

Mena says: “I love doing something that is physical but also mentally allows you to think and reflect. My favorite aspect of farming is watching the miracle of it all. The cycle of life. How plants go dormant, appear almost dead in the winter only to return in full glory in the spring. How a seed turns into a flower. Gardening keeps me grounded by reminding me there is a season for everything; a time to grow and a time to rest.”

Mena sells bouquets, event florals, and hosts pick-your-own events. She is beginning to grow a limited number of vegetables, some of which she plans to donate to food banks. Eventually, she’d love to offer farm-to-table meals with produce grown on the property and other items sourced from local farms. She will also have a booth at the Big E’s CT Building on September 29, representing the best of CT agriculture.

As a pediatrician, Dr. Mena heals the body. As a flower farmer, she believes she helps to heal the soul: “When someone receives one of my bouquets of flowers, they feel special and it instantly makes their day. My bouquets bring joy and that has healing qualities.”

Mena’s Garden is about more than flowers. It’s about restoring an important part of Guilford’s agricultural history and revitalizing a farm where people can slow down and enjoy nature.

Invasive Plant Symposium: October 28, 2026

We are happy to help spread the word about an upcoming event from our partners at the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group (CIPWG).

Join CIPWG's 2026 Invasive Plant Symposium on Wednesday, October 28, at the UConn Student Union in Storrs, CT.

This year's theme is "From Awareness to Action — Strengthening Our Response to Invasive Plants."

Sessions include a variety of techniques for management of terrestrial and aquatic invasives, as well as restoration with native alternatives. CEU's for organizations and Pesticide Recertification Credits are available.
