Meet Caregiver Recipient of the John B. McAlister, Sr. Perseverance Award: Shari Alleyne 💜
Life-Changing Moment: After her father’s passing in September 2000, Shari relocated back to her childhood home to become her mother Pauline’s companion. Over the years, her mother faced a series of health challenges—including a stroke, colon cancer, hip replacement surgery, and now arthritis—which slowly robbed her of independence and mobility.
Caregiving Journey: For more than 20 years, Shari has been her mother’s primary caretaker and companion. She cooks, cleans, washes her hair, gives manicures and pedicures, manages appointments, and transports her to doctors, therapy, and community outings like Carnegie Hall, the beach, spa visits, and Broadway shows. Most recently, she also became caregiver to her brother, who was diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, taking on the role of his health care advocate.
Family & Faith: Shari retired from full-time employment during COVID to protect her mother’s health, fully stepping into her caregiving role. She passionately believes that “blessings lie under the feet of her Mother,” and lives out her reverence through love, kindness, humility, and selfless service—always remembering her mother’s sacrifices and unconditional love for the family.
Gratitude & Honor: Shari is honored to be recognized by her “Tribe” and Blessed by Brandi, Inc. She shares that caregivers often do the work in silence, not wanting to burden others with their journey, and is grateful this award acknowledges an often overlooked group of amazing individuals.
