Temporary traffic light coming to hodgeville and hwy 30

GUYTON – Even though she was unable to attend the Effingham County Chamber of Commerce’s “State of the County” Breakfast 2023 on Tuesday, Ann R. Purcell had a significant impact on it.

Purcell, the 1st Congressional District representative on the State Transportation Board, delivered good news for Hodgeville Road motorists through Chamber Secretary Kim Iler-Morgan.

“She wanted to be the first to tell you that – while the roundabout is still about a year out – the (Georgia Department of Transportation’s) quick-response money has been slated and that there will be a temporary traffic signal at Hodgeville (Road) and (Ga.) Highway 30,” Iler-Morgan said. “We hope to have that commence in early June to mid-July. Thank you, Ms. Ann.”

Purcell, the State Transportation Board secretary and a Rincon resident, has long pushed improvements at the dangerous intersection. It is located in Chatham County but used by hundreds of Effingham County drivers daily.

The message Purcell sent through Iler-Morgan -- they talked by telephone late Monday evening -- was enthusiastically received by a large crowd in the Guyton Community Center.

Effingham County offered to share the cost of a Hodgeville Road-Ga. Hwy 30 roundabout with Chatham County more than a year ago but there is a prohibition on using county road funds in other counties. GDOT will help Chatham County pay for the project.
