Happy President's Day...

Despite a lifetime of trials and tribulations, Lincoln’s disposition was remarkably content. Even during the darkest days of the Civil War, he portrayed a peace that surpassed the nation’s understanding. “It is difficult to make a man miserable,” he said,” when he feels worthy of himself and claims kindred to the great God who made him.” Do you have a relationship with God that helps you look past your present circumstances? President Lincoln’s self -assurance came, not from self-reliance, but from his knowledge of God.
~Abraham Lincoln’s Daily Treasure edited by Thomas Freiling

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone-especially to those of the family of faith.”
~Galatians 6:9-10

Surrounded...

Have you ever heard the saying, if you hang around ten millionaires you will be the eleventh? Obviously there is more to it than that, but it does bring up some good thoughts. If we choose to surround ourselves with wise people, we will absorb wisdom. However, If we choose to step into the fooliness group, wisdom will be absent.

This is a lesson that my father instilled in me and one I so desperately am trying to teach my children as well. Who we surround ourselves with will literally make or break us. So I am very intentional about who I am having conversations with because I want to be challenged and strengthened.

A good friend of mine recently made a statement that stopped me right in my tracks. He said, "if you argue for your limitations, you get to keep them." You would be hard pressed to find a statement more telling, revealing and challenging. A prime example of who you hang around, matters.

It is so easy (in the short term atleast) to surround ourselves with people that will just reinforce what we want to believe, but is that always the best for us long term? Maybe we should dig in and search for the people that will encourage us in devolping into the best version of who we can be. The people that will call out what needs to change with real, grounded wisdom.

Be careful who you are making tracks with, because those tracks are pointing to where you are going.

SUNDAY REST-DAY: Read & really meditate on Hebrews 4:11-13. Study it until you UNDERSTAND.

God never asked you to fill every hour of your calendar with appointments, work into the wee-hours for OT$, conquer the world for significance, run your kids to umpteen community activities in the name of good parenting, and then party (or flop over under the weight of exhaustion) all weekend!

Jesus says that you are to let Him teach you (Mt. 11:29) how to find rest. What a good, good Father! If life feels too heavy. ALL. THE. TIME... then let that alert you to the fact that you are not to carry the world. Simply yoke up with HIM. (Mt. 11:30)

You were created for much more love, peace, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control than you're choosing to receive! And guess what? That means you may choose to strive ONLY to rest in your Heavenly Father's arms. HEAR Him. He will empower EVERYTHING He wants you to do! He is calling you to rest in Him! (Mt. 11:28) Priority One!
