🌾🚫 HELP US “BEAT THE CHEAT” THIS MAY! 🚫🌾

Cheatgrass may look harmless, but this invasive plant is one of the biggest emerging threats to Gunnison County’s landscape, wildlife, and wildfire resilience.

Once it spreads, it crowds out native plants, dries out early, and creates dangerous wildfire fuel. It also threatens critical habitat for the Gunnison Sage-grouse.

The GOOD news? Right now is the BEST time to stop it.
🌱 In May, cheatgrass can still be pulled BEFORE it goes to seed. Once it dries out, the seeds spread easily on boots, pets, bikes, and vehicles — creating even more infestations across the Valley.

Here’s how YOU can help:
✔️ Pull cheatgrass now — roots and all
✔️ Bag it and throw it away (don’t compost it!)
✔️ Check your yard, trails, and open spaces
✔️ Join one of our community pull events!

🎶 May 16, 8:00 a.m.: Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Beers, Bands, and Barbed Wire Strands at I-Bar Ranch: This long-standing annual event combines stewardship and community, and includes a cheatgrass pulling and mapping component at the Signal Peak trails. 🌞The UGRWCD was thrilled to be able to bring the Water Wonder Trailer to this year's 4th Grade Water Festival! We presented to 4 classes on topics like drought, erosion, river health, and local water sources!
