The Mississippi Institute of Dolphin Science (MSIDS) is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization organized to manage wild dolphin kingdoms, perform environmental enhancement of dolphin habitats, and engage in research and outreach activities linking zoos, aquariums, and home school learners with interactive exhibits. MSIDS encourages anybody who takes a wild dolphin picture anywhere in the Gulf

of Mexico to post it here on the MSIDS page which uses a fin recognition program to identify dolphins, and MSIDS research staff can search the history for each dolphin picture posted. Dolphin Kingdom preserves are wild dolphin habitats in the Gulf of Mexico where MSIDS engages in research, public outreach, and assessment of wild dolphin health.

Biphonation: When an animal simultaneously produces two sounds.
Did you know dolphins are capable of biphonation? Studies show that about 53% of dolphin signature whistles utilize biphonations, enabling them to convey multiple, complex signals with just one sound type. This biphonation creates a two-toned effect that can be heard in other animal calls. In humans, biphonation is traditionally found in Khoomei (Mongolian and Tuvan throat singing). For dolphins, biphonation in signature whistles acts as a complex acoustic marker that researchers think encodes individual or group identity and possibly age. This image shows what a biphonation can look like to a researcher on a spectrogram. It could be 1 dolphin making both sounds (biphonation), or 2 dolphins making 2 sounds. That's where video analysis comes in!
DCP research associates looked at biphonation in Atlantic spotted dolphins back in the day: Kaplan, JD, Melillo-Sweeting, K, Reiss, D. (2017). Biphonal calls in Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis): bitonal and burst-pulse whistles. Bioacoustics, DOI:10.1080/09524622.2017.1300105.

Less than 1% of Mississippi Sound dolphins show indications of negative human interactions in spite of the large volume of recreational and commercial fisheries, boating and shipping traffic, in a relatively small area. This is a good number and it can be even better. Target ‘zero’ negative interactions.
