This past weekend, the VLI had the privilege of participating in the Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System.

Our 3 volunteer students connected directly with veterans in our community, helping them complete new client applications and sharing information about the legal services we provide.

In past years, outreach efforts like this have led to the opportunity to represent and support many veterans in securing the benefits they have earned through their service.

We are grateful to our students, the Bay Pines VA for hosting such an impactful event, and to the veterans who took the time to speak with us and share their stories.

Kayla Somoano, current Stetson Law 3L spent a semester with us last year. She described the Clinic as one of the best experiences she has had in law school, sharing that she "would do it one thousand times over."

If you are a law student interested in sharing Kayla's experience, apply to work with us! There are two opportunities to do so:

1. Apply for our summer fellowship, where you will help us continue making progress on our cases between academic semesters. To apply, email a cover letter and resume to Professor Zimarakos at [email protected].

2. Apply for the Veterans Advocacy Clinic course in the fall! Learn the ins and outs of veterans law while working on real cases with real clients. This week, the Veterans Law Institute was honored to host student veterans from Stetson University’s Deland campus for an outreach event.

The event began with a presentation by two Veterans Advocacy Clinic students, who provided an overview of the VA claims and appeals process, helping attendees better understand the resources and options available to them. Thank you for the presentation, Melissa and Greg!

Then our students, working alongside volunteer attorneys, met one-on-one with veterans from Stetson's undergraduate campus in Deland to review their VA claims and provide guidance on next steps, including potential appeal options and supporting evidence that could strengthen their cases. These conversations gave students the opportunity to apply their training in veterans law while helping fellow Stetson students navigate the VA benefits system.

We are grateful to the volunteer attorneys Trista Miller, Hanah Walker, Kathren Wilkerson, and our very own Mary Samarkos! And of course, thank you to our dedicated clinic students who made this outreach possible! And thanks to Chris Griffin from the Deland campus for bringing veterans to our campus. We are proud to support the veterans in our Stetson community.

We love seeing our people shine!

Three of our students and one of our staff members were recently featured in the CAVC Bar Association's Veterans Law Journal. Valeriya and Clayton were highlighted for their recent moot court competition win—an outstanding achievement and a testament to their hard work and advocacy skills.

We’re also excited to see Giovanna and our staff attorney Sydnie recognized for their scholarship. They co-drafted a case summary for the journal analyzing an important change in case law precedent.

We are incredibly proud of their contributions and of their engagement with the CAVC Bar Association and the broader legal community. Congratulations to Valeriya, Clayton, Giovanna, and Sydnie, on this well-deserved recognition!

Its BOOTCAMP DAY!

At 9:00am, our new clinic students arrived at the Veterans Law Institute for bootcamp, a crash course in veterans law. Next week, they will start digging into their cases.

Sydnie, our staff attorney, represented the VLI Saturday morning at the Wreaths Across America ceremony at Bay Pines National Cemetery.

Each December, this meaningful tradition brings communities together during the holiday season to honor and remember the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans. Placing wreaths at the gravesites is a small but powerful gesture that reminds us why our work on behalf of veterans matters, at Christmas and all year long.
