Our final Wiregrass Kings Track meet was was run in Lebanon, Tennessee May 2nd.
The HXN Championship spread a highly competitive field, with hundreds of runners and densely packed races.
And our Kings plunged in with competitive drive and boldness. I once again grew teary as I watched our runners prepare for their races and then mix it up with the fastest competition of the season. No, we did not come away with PRβs. But success is measured in many ways. And my conclusion after reflecting on Saturday: we have some racers wearing the Wiregrass Kings uniform. True racers. Here are the resultsβ¦
Sam Holt: 21st middle school 100m, 18.08
21st out of 24 middle school 200, 39.18
What a joy it was to see this courageous young man making his way around the curve, enduring through the homestretch.
Gabe Holt: 17th out of 49 in the 1600, 4:55
12th out of 25 in the 3200, 10:38
Elizabeth Thomas: 11th out of 34 in the 800m, 2:45
16th out of 32 in the 1600, 6:03
Not every day is going to be a smashing PR. There will be many variables that affect races and workouts. But one thing you CAN do, regardless of circumstance: you can press on. Not only did Sam run with poise and that form weβve come to know so well, his brother Gabe displayed perseverance and sheer guts as he raced despite not feeling well. He made decisive moves in his races, refusing to back downβ¦
β¦And Elizabeth. Exhausted from long lines and waiting on the infield, this girl raced. And she raced with boldness, moving up to 4th at certain points in both races. She threw herself into the mix, insisting on competing with this packed field with her massive heart.
And I could not have been more proud of her.
And then to top it all off, Elliette Jones ran in a packed 5k back home, claiming first place overall female with a 22:20.
We were all honestly a bit subdued this past week, for various reasons. This was a very sweet spring, which had now reached its end. Parting ways with the Holts as they left for Texas was bittersweet indeed. But nonetheless, this spring exceeded expectations. I pray you all simply rest and enjoy thinking back on this, the first track season of the Wiregrass Kings.
