Save Our Soundside

Save Our Soundside SOS works to protect the community and environment by educating the public about the adverse impacts of overdevelopment.

Send us a message to help with planting trees, saving trees, contacting county commissioners, signing a petition, working on storm water pond beautification, peninsula habitat restoration, and more! We vow to continue educating, inspiring, and motivating individuals, businesses, and organizations in our community to protect our citizens, their property, our land and waters.

Cities are built; forests are grown. Protect the irreplaceable.

A backyard forest doesn't need to be huge. Even a small corner with native trees, shrubs, and flowers becomes a working ecosystem. Birds find shelter and food. Insects pollinate and break down organic matter. The plants themselves clean the air and manage water runoff.

You're not just gardening—you're building habitat. Trees take years to mature, but they're worth the wait. Understory plants and flowers fill the gaps while you're waiting. Ground cover does the work most people miss.

Start with what grows well in your area. Native plants establish faster and need less fussing. Add layers: tall trees, shorter trees, shrubs, perennials. Each layer serves a purpose. Over time, the space becomes self-sustaining in ways a typical lawn never does.

Nestlé paid $230 a year to pump millions of gallons from one of Florida's most sacred springs. 💧

The permit was issued by the state of Florida. The water went into plastic bottles. The spring got algae blooms, receding water levels, and a dying ecosystem in return.

Ginnie Springs, located along the Santa Fe River in Gilchrist County, was once so clear you could see 30 feet to the bottom. Divers came from across the country. Locals swam there for generations.

By the time environmental groups forced a legal challenge in 2021, the aquifer had already been drawn down for years. Florida's water management districts — the agencies supposed to protect these resources — approved the withdrawals while the springs quietly suffocated.

This is not a natural disaster. It is a documented transaction: a corporation took a public resource, paid almost nothing for it, and left the damage for everyone else to inherit.

If you let goldenrod grow along your fence line, it would feed 115 species of bees... while your lawn feeds zero.
This golden beacon of late-season nectar transforms ordinary backyard edges into vital pollinator highways.
Bees aren’t just honey-makers — they’re essential to one-third of the food we eat; supporting them with native plants like goldenrod strengthens entire ecosystems.
Smart gardening isn’t about perfection, it’s about planting with purpose: every goldenrod bloom is a lifeline in a world starving for biodiversity.
Let your fence bloom. The bees will thank you — and so will your garden. 🐝🌼
