The Guilford Food Hub has operated as an all volunteer-run project for over 5 years. It has grown steadily and now has over 140 active buyers and about 50 individual orders placed biweekly. In order to sustain this popular program, Neighborhood Roots is now seeking a reliable paid assistant to strengthen our market operations.

Announcing the next Guilford Food Hub producer event: Equation Formulary Visit - Mushroom Dreams and Forest Realities!

When: Sunday, August 30 at 10:00 am (please arrive on time) Tour begins promptly at 10am and aims to finish by 11am or shortly thereafter.

Where: Equation Formulary, 108 Bassett Hill Rd., Guilford, VT (between Keets Brook Rd. and the end of East Mountain Rd.)

*Please Register* for this FREE event to let us know you're coming: https://airtable.com/apptB2TtzvgiBHof0/pagsl6mvSIxkdzz01/form

Join Equation Formulary's Matty Adams for a visit to his forest cultivation operation of edible mushrooms. Matty produces mushroom infused value-added products like Fairy Dust Mushroom Salt, Night Velvet Instant Mushroom Bouillon, the popular Ginger Maple Shiitake pickles, Thank You Grandmother Reishi Elixir, and other special products.

In this hour-long amble and ramble, visit some of the cultivating operation and the product processing area. Matty emphasizes natural production and foraging methods that rely on native wood types and the whims of the seasons, more so than the controlled climate and plastics-intensive methods of many producers. Note: this is a tour of his operation, not a class in do-it-yourself cultivation, but questions will be welcomed.

While we will proceed slowly along woods roads, the terrain is at times steep and possibly not accessible to those with mobility challenges. The tour will take place rain or shine.

The first in the series of Guilford Food Hub farm tours is coming up soon. Event and registration details below.

When: Saturday, August 8 at 4:00 pm

Where: Fooster Farm, 161 South St., West Brattleboro VT

Please Register for this FREE event to let us know you're coming: https://airtable.com/apptB2TtzvgiBHof0/pagiELdUHMJMHi46v/form

Fooster Farm is a small, diversified family farm in West Brattleboro owned and operated by Jane Diefenbach and Ra van Dyk. Fooster Farm offers vegetables, eggs, and berries for sale through Guilford Food Hub and a free-choice CSA. Jane does most of the vegetable gardening on one-third acre and Ra manages the rotational grazing of 30 laying hens and a flock of six Katahdin sheep on five acres. Fooster Farm joined the Guilford Food Hub vendor community with truly modest offerings in 2023, added the CSA in 2024, and has been building capacity ever since.

Fooster Farm follows organic production practices but is not yet organic certified. Soil health has been a major concern since Ra and Jane moved to this neglected farm in 2018. Most of the garden beds are no-till and Ra generates all of the compost used on the farm.

The tour will cover the four main gardens, the orchard, and the pasture, including sheep shelters and mobile coop, for those who care to walk 50 yards or so to the current paddocks. Topics for discussion could include cover cropping, nutrient cycling, crop protection, and plastic on the farm.

Celebrate spring at the annual spring Community Plant Swap. We'll exchange our extra seeds, plant starts, houseplants, and perennial divisions as we get ready for the new gardening season. Don’t have anything to swap? That’s OK! There’ll be plenty of plants for everyone.

Please arrive on time! We can not control the exuberance of gardeners swapping plants. In past years, people began swapping right away and late comers missed out on some of the fun.

This year the Guilford Recreation Commission will be running yard games during the swap, too. There'll be plenty of fun for all!

No registration required for this free community event.
