When a fire occurred, residents from the area would rush to the scene and do whatever they could until the firetruck from the neighboring communities arrived. The Taylor brothers owned several fire extinguishers which were also used,
consisting of a water and soda acid solution (Taylors are still active on the department today). In 1960, Greendale notified York Township trustee, Floyd Hornbach, that they would not be able tp continue to provide fire protection to the area if the community didn't have a fire department of their own. Greendale would continue to provide support and assistance. The official membership began on June 13th, 1960 with 20 charter members. On August 1st, 1960 a deposit of $200 was given to Greendale VFD to purchase their 1936 Ahrens-Fox Pumper. The truck had a 100 gallon water tank. The remaining $800 was paid September 1960. Other purchases the first couple of years included: $50 used furnace, $410 Gorman Rupp portable pump, $354 for four nozzels, $64 for four fire coats, $340 a second Gorman Rupp portable pump (model 6201), $300 siren, $210 for chemical gas masks, $44 for four helmets and $491 for misc. fire hose. The first official fund raising event was a Chili Supper in February 1961 held at the Guilford School. $133.28 was raised. Today the fire department continues the tradition of an annual supper. It is now typically held in June the week after Father's Day at Perfect North Ski Slopes. The current and inactive members gather to fry what is some of the best peppered fried chicken in the region.
