The Connecticut DEEP Fisheries Division is considering potential regulation changes to summertime tournament bass fishing. We are seeking input from the angling community via a short survey (https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/D6CbvAdx3B) to get angler information on tournament regulations preferences and bass fishing. Please review this document (https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/deep/fishing/general_information/tournaments/tournament-regs-questionnaire-for-email.pdf), which explains why we are looking into potential changes. As angler behaviors and desires evolve, so too must the Fisheries Division’s management tools to protect and preserve quality fisheries for all to enjoy.
Why does this matter: Currently, black bass tournament groups must request an exemption from Bass Management Lake (BML)https://portal.ct.gov/-/media/DEEP/fishing/freshwater/bassbrocpdf.pdf regulations to hold weigh-in format fishing events (where fish are caught, kept in a livewell, and then weighed at one location at the end) during most of the year. However, from July 1 - August 31, current BML regulations effectively prevent tournaments from hosting weigh-in format events during that time as no exemptions are given (with the exception of Gardner Lake and Mansfield Hollow Reservoir). DEEP Fisheries Division is considering removing BML regulations from the 29 waterbodies currently managed under this designation. Because DEEP is considering removal of BML regulations, the Fisheries Division is exploring alternative summertime protections for black bass.
Please note that if advanced and approved, any possible regulation changes would not take effect until January 1, 2028, at the earliest after going through the normal rule making process which includes a public hearing and opportunities for the angling public to provide written and/or verbal testimony on any proposed changes.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to share your thoughts and opinions on potential regulation changes to tournament bass fishing. Take the survey here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/g/D6CbvAdx3B
This survey will be open until August 14th.
