We're honored to announce our last Shine the Light winner is Sally Servello, Telephone Operator/Receptionist, or as she's known around Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc., the "Director of First Impressions."

Sally's story with Community Action spans 22 years and is one of the most powerful testaments to what this network is all about. What began as a moment of need; enrolling her daughter in Head Start, became a life-changing opportunity that led her through personal hardship, a cancer diagnosis, sobriety, and ultimately, the adoption of a little boy who now has a family because of the love and support surrounding her.

"I don't just work at Community Action — I believe in it! I am dedicated to helping others find the same support, encouragement and opportunity that helped me rebuild and move forward."

Thank you Sally, and thank you to all of our Shine the Light winners this Community Action Month. You are the heart of Community Action.

Today we pause to remember and honor those who gave everything in service to our country.

As we continue to celebrate Community Action Month, we Shine the Light on the incredible people from across New York State who are helping people, changing lives, and strengthening communities every day. Our next winner is Kevin Burns, Social Care Navigator at Tioga Opportunities, Inc.

Kevin's path to human services was shaped by his lived experience. At just 11 years old, his family of five was living in a single bedroom motel room and receiving government benefits. The case managers and social workers who showed up for his family left a lasting impression that would define his entire career. For Kevin, this work has always been a calling.

"The workers who assisted my family inspired me to follow a career path that would allow me to help others and give back to these same systems that helped get us through."

Stay tuned as we announce more Shine the Light winners!

Heat or groceries. Medicine or electricity. These are the impossible choices too many New Yorkers are forced to make. NYS Senator Brian Kavanagh gets it, and he's standing up for full funding of the Weatherization Assistance Program. We're grateful for champions in the Legislature who are fighting for the families we serve.

Thousands of New York families are living in unsafe, unhealthy conditions right now, and the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) teams from our Community Action Agencies across the state are showing up to change that. This work is vital. The funding must follow. We urge New York State leaders to include WAP in the final budget.

Every May, we Shine the Light on the incredible people at the heart of Community Action from across New York State who are helping people, changing lives, and strengthening communities every day. Each year, staff from across the network submit stories of colleagues who deserve to be recognized. We're honored to announce that our next winner is Ruth Bagley, Family Advocate at Cortland County Community Action Program.

Ruth's connection to Community Action goes back further than her nearly 35-year career, it goes back to her childhood. As a young mom finishing a certification course, she applied for a position at CAPCO but didn't get it. Instead, she enrolled her two daughters in the Head Start program and began volunteering. A substitute position opened up, then a permanent one, and the rest is history.

For Ruth, this work has always been personal.

"I was a Head Start child in the 1960's. The program started as a bridge out of poverty, and I'm glad I made it over that bridge. I want to pay it forward and help others cross that bridge."

Stay tuned as we announce more Shine the Light winners!
