Parson and his wife moved to Albany from Shubuta, Mississippi, among millions of African Americans in the Great Migration who left the South to escape racial and economic oppression. Dissatisfied with living conditions in the South End, Rev. Parson and William Toliver bought farm land in the Pine Bush which reminded them of Mississippi. Families settled and built homes there and the Rapp Road Community is now designated as a New York State and National Historic District.

: Lady Florine Delores “Sue” Johnson (1939–2024) was the First Lady of the Greater St. John’s Church of God in Christ, where she served faithfully beside her husband, Bishop McKinley Johnson. For decades, she ministered to congregants, young women, and her wider community, becoming a trusted spiritual presence in the church. Born in Halifax, Virginia, she moved to Albany as a young girl and became deeply rooted in the Capital Region. Her leadership, grace, and commitment to service were defining features of her ministry and life.

👒 Her hat, featured in the exhibition, “Fashion and Faith: Hats of the Great Migration,” honors the role of Black church women like Lady Johnson whose faith, leadership, and community presence helped shape Albany during and after the Great Migration.
