Fire Safe Sonoma is once again presenting a free, three-part series on wildland safety. This free, three-part series is part of the Northwest Roadway Safety, Fuels Reduction, and Community Chipper and Engagement Project, a Sonoma County Transportation and Public Works grant-funded project. The project is intended to reduce risks related to future wildfires by removing vegetation identified as hazards to firefighters and the public, in the interest of creating safe and smooth evacuations during an emergency. As part of this project, Fire Safe Sonoma is providing education and outreach efforts to encourage property owners in the targeted area to clear hazardous vegetation from their properties and to take advantage of the Sonoma County Fire Chipper Program. The Northwest Roadway Safety, Fuels Reduction, and Community Chipper and Engagement Project is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment— particularly in disadvantaged communities.

* Remove any cushions away from walls
* Keep debris off of your roof
* Clean your gutters
* Place screens over vents
* Do not use bark as a w**d barrier
* Remove any leaf debris
* Cut tree branches 6 feet above any other vegetation

To prepare for possible Evacuation:
* Sign up for SoCo Alert Notifications - https://socoemergency.org/prepare/get-ready/stay-informed/socoalert/
* Sign up for Nixle Alert Notifications - https://local.nixle.com/register/
* Keep a go bag ready with the following

To Shelter in Place if Evacuation is not possible:

Dear Vacation Beach Neighbors,

Our Council has been working with Lynda Hopkins' office and the Department of Transportation and Public Works (TPW) over the last few months. We are trying to find a more permanent solution to the Vacation Beach river crossing in order to provide safe access out of our neighborhood, specifically during fire season. We have discussed many options, from ways to put the bridge in earlier and leave it in until December, to a permanent bridge. We are thrilled to announce that the Board of Supervisors approved money at their June 9th meeting for a feasibility study for this project. Thank you to all who wrote letters in support of this to the five Supervisors! We will soon begin the process of working with TPW and an Engineering firm on this study. We are also working on writing grants and looking for more money to support the goal of building a permanent bridge.

Cal Fire - Fire Safety Outside of Your House

Outside, wildfire safety begins by making sure you, your family and your home are ready for a wildfire. Remember three simple steps: "Ready, Set, Go!". Being Ready for a wildfire starts by maintaining 100 feet of Defensible Space and hardening homes with fire resistant building materials. Be Set by creating a Wildfire Action Plan with your family. Finally, be prepared to Go and evacuate your home. Leave early, before it's too late. Learn more on "Ready, Set, Go!" at ReadyForWildfire.org.

California's Mediterranean climate lends itself naturally to wildfires, which is why residents and vacationers must take extra caution when outdoors and steps to prevent wildfires. "One Less Spark means One Less Wildfire".

Whether it's using powered equipment before 10 a.m. when the humidity is higher and temperatures cooler to reduce the chance of fire, to following proper guidelines for burning branches and leave debris on your property, to enjoying a campfire, we must all do our part to prevent wildfire. Learn more at ReadyForWildfire.org.

During the fire season when the humidity drops and the winds increase, fire danger is elevated even higher and the public is asked to be extra vigilant. Lean more on steps to take during Red Flag Warnings and Critical Fire Weather.

Preparing for and preventing wildfires is everyone's responsibility.
