Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District will be at the Trey Adkins Gym in Hurley, VA, on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 6:00 pm to discuss programs available to farmers and homeowners of Buchanan County.

We will be preparing a meal for all in attendance. Please let us know if you plan to attend, so we will be sure to have enough. Call us at (276) 935-7750.

Lessons these students learn from Mrs Velva Bostic and Rita Breeding are teaching them sustainability. 🍱

Big Sandy Soil & Water Conservation District is thankful to Craig Stiltner for partnering with us to establish fruit trees in the Poplar Creek Park and Harman Park. 🛝

We were able to plant a pear tree at the Poplar Creek Park and two Plum trees a Peach tree and two apple trees at the Harman Park. 🍎🍎🍑🍐

We even had one little apple tree that had baby apples on it🌳🍎🍏

Help us watch the trees to see if you can see any fruit developing. 👀👀

We just can’t believe how great our YCLI students are!!!!

Blake Childress has completed his project of installing hummingbird feeders. Blake designed and built his feeders to maximize the availability of food for the hummingbirds. 💐🌺

Blake will be installing these throughout the county so if you see one send us a I picture and let us know. 📸

In addition to working with YCLI, Blake has earned his certification with the Grundy Fire Department🧑‍🚒🚒

Congratulations Blake on all of your accomplishments!!!

Oh My! Oh My!

Look what Emma has done. 👀👀

Emma O’Quinn is a member of the YCLI (Youth Conservation Leadership Institute) program and has completed her project representing Grundy High School and Big Sandy SWCD.

Emma has planted perennial pollinators near the apiary at Southern Gap. The butterflies were enjoying the flowers immediately after Emma finished planting.🦋🌸🌻🌺. She also planted several varieties of annual seeds in her pollinator bed.

Emma’s mentor was Mrs. Rochelle Deel. Thank you Mrs. Deel for working with Emma. 👩‍🏫👩‍🎓💐

Abby is a member of our YCLI (Youth Conservation Leadership Institute) team.👭🧑‍🤝‍🧑

For her project she designed and created bee hotels. 🐝🏨. Bee hotels are sanctuaries for bees to rest as they are traveling on their journey to acquire pollen to make honey!! 🐝🌸🍯

Big Sandy Soil & Water Conservation District Directors and staff celebrated with the Council Envirothon team and their coach Ms Amanda Dorton at the Council Park for their participation in the state Envirothon Competition. We also celebrated Ms Amanda Dorton as the Co-recipient of the 2025 Big Sandy Conservation Teacher of the Year.

We are so proud of you all!!
