RAGBRAI Riders Did You Know!?

Grundy had it's own mini RAGBRAI: GRABAG.

RAGBRAI has spawned countless other bicycle rides in the U.S., including the Grundy Register’s Annual Bicycling Across Grundy County (GRABAG) on August 11-12, 1979.

John Karras, one of the founders of RAGBRAI at the Des Moines Register and Tribune, gave his blessing to the idea of GRABAG and even suggested its name. Starting in Grundy Center, 60 participants biked 93 miles β€œthrough every major town as well as a minor one,” The Grundy Register wrote.

πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ We Need Your Help to Make RAGBRAI Amazing! πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ

RAGBRAI is more than just a bike rideβ€”it's a community effort that brings thousands of people together from across Iowa and beyond. As we get closer to the big week, we're looking for volunteers to help make the experience safe, welcoming, and memorable for everyone.

Whether you can spare a few hours or a full day, your time and energy can make a real difference. Volunteer opportunities are available for a variety of roles, and no special experience is requiredβ€”just a positive attitude and a willingness to help!

By volunteering, you'll:
βœ… Meet great people and be part of the RAGBRAI spirit
βœ… Support riders and visitors from around the world
βœ… Help showcase the hospitality our community is known for
βœ… Create memories you'll be talking about long after the last bike rolls through town

If you've ever enjoyed a community event and wondered how it all comes together, this is your chance to be part of the team that makes the magic happen.

Grundy Center has a historic connection to UFOs dating back to the very beginning of the phenomenon.

When mysterious objects were first reported in 1947, they were commonly called β€œflying saucers.” That changed when Grundy Center native Edward J. Ruppelt coined the term β€œUnidentified Flying Object” β€” or UFO.

Capt. Ruppelt served in the U.S. Air Force and led the Air Force’s official investigation into unexplained aerial phenomena from 1951 to 1953. In 1956, he published The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects, a landmark book on the subject.

His work even inspired the 1957 film UFO: The True Story of Flying Saucers, in which Capt. Ruppelt played a prominent role.

A small Iowa town with a surprising place in UFO history.
