📖 This semester, we launched a thought-provoking book club made possible by the generosity of the Mises Institute. Throughout the semester, we dove into various chapters of Murray Rothbard’s essay collection “Egalitarianism as a Revolt Against Nature.” At our final meeting, we read and discussed “Ludwig von Mises and the Paradigm for Our Age.”
In this essay, Rothbard reflects on the historiography of science, critiquing the “Whig theory” of the history of science, which assumes continuous, linear progress. He points out that genuine intellectual progress requires an unwavering commitment to truth—a quality that Mises embodied throughout his life, as he resisted the intellectual fads and political pressures of his time, sticking to fundamental economic truths. At the same time, mainstream economics has deviated from this path, abandoning key principles once widely understood.
Rothbard argues that Mises’ work offers a corrective paradigm rooted in the reality of human action. Mises’ economic theory deduces the entire science of economics from the simple, undeniable axiom that man acts. However, despite Mises’ major contributions, his ideas were marginalized due to ideological opposition. Rothbard underscores Mises’ continued importance as a beacon of light for returning to sound economics, urging the revival of Austrian economics to address the crises in modern economic thought and policy. The essay concluded with a powerful quote from his mentor, Mises:
“The body of economic knowledge is an essential element in the structure of human civilization; it is the foundation upon which modern industrialism and all the moral, intellectual, technological, and therapeutical achievements of the last centuries have been built. It rests with men whether they will make the proper use of the rich treasure with which this knowledge provides them or whether they will leave it unused. But if they fail to take the best advantage of it and disregard its teachings and warnings, they will not annul economics; they will stamp out society and the human race.”
This timeless wisdom reminds us of the crucial role economic understanding plays in sustaining a flourishing civilization.
