A Purrfect Start

A Purrfect Start A Purrfect Start is a 501(c)(3) all volunteer/foster based group of dedicated individuals helping animals in Grove City and Columbus, Ohio areas.

OUR GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

To reach the general public through education on the importance of spaying/neutering, as well as, the humane care of animals in the community. To assist when able to find resources and outlets for low cost veterinarian care and/or placement for unwanted pets. To collect and share information on the different needs of the community in controlling the unwanted pet populatio

n. To only accept the maximum number of animals for which space is available. No animal will be euthanized unless it has an incurable, contagious disease, an untreatable illness or injury or prolonging its life would be prolonging its suffering, or unless it is aggressive to the point of being dangerous to other animals or humans. To provide a safe, secure and healthy environment for abused, neglected and unwanted dogs and cats, when possible. To have a carefully monitored pet adoption process. To work towards changes in legislation on the laws governing animals, specifically dogs and cats and the standard of care of said animals. To obtain monies through memberships, sponsorships, fundraisers, grants and donations from individuals, groups and foundations. We are always in need of donations of food, supplies and funds for medical bills. We also always need volunteers to help fund-raise, care for cats at adoption events and locations. Since we do not have a shelter, we rely on foster homes to keep our rescued dogs and cats healthy and happy until they are adopted to Forever Families. Let us know if you can help in any way.

This is Barbosa aka Bosa. Today is his 20th birthday. He was not the first cat I had ever rescued but he was one the that started me into rescue. He also was one that has the sad story in what humans can do the animals. His mother was an owned cat but as soon as she was no longer a cute kitten, she was discarded. Neighborhood kids
were cruel to her and she became very fearful of humans. She then had a litter of four at a young age and when she tried to protect her kittens was turned into animal control for a vicious animal. This happened in my neighborhood and when I heard about it, I couldn't let them take the mom or leave the kittens out there to starve. I found were the trap was and monitored it daily to make sure she didn't get caught as she would have been destroyed. This went on for a couple of weeks until I come home one day and see neighbor kids around a dog crate poking at something with a stick. I went to check and they had three kittens that were only about 10 weeks old, terrified and Bosa had a cut on his eye. I took the kittens unsured what I could do for them. I reached out to a rescue and the said they would take them if I could foster for two weeks. I agreed. I named the kittens Barbosa, Ragetti (aka Rags) and Ruby. I started their vet care and had set up a trap to catch their mother and a fourth kitten that the neighbors had said they did not catch. They said she was a Tortie. Rags warmed up very quickly, then Bosa but really only with me and Ruby remained very standoffish although never aggressive. Bosa was much larger then his siblings and had continued to grow faster then the other two. The vet at first thought he was from a different litter. Three weeks after taking them, we had come home around midnight from visiting family for the 4th of July, as we approached our home we spotted something running in the road, it was a tortie kitten. I found out that another neighbor had been feeding her and lied to me about seeing her because she enjoy seeing her and didn't want me to take her away. I was able to quickly trap her and start her vet care. I named her Opal. The rescue never took them from me so they completed all their vet care and I started taking them to adoption events. Rags did well, Bosa always kept his eye on me and Ruby and Opal would just sit in the back of the adoption cage. I believe it was the third weekend that I took them to an adoption event that I had made a promise to Bosa, that if someone did not adopt him with his brother today, I would adopt him. Well, Rags got adopted that day to a wonderful home. Bosa got adopted by me. After a few weeks and one failed adoption for Ruby and Opal, they also stayed with us. Ruby was always very shy but she was gentle and would allow nail trims and meds with no issues. We lost Opal to cancer at the age of 17 and Ruby last year at the age of 19. Bosa has arthritis and had spent 2 1/2 years on Solensia. It had helped him greatly but we stopped it two months ago because he had lost over 7 pounds since he started it and I was having trouble with him eating. The weight loss seemed to help with his joint pain and I noticed that he ate better after stopping the meds. We know he is also in Renal failure which is adding to his eating problems. He also went deaf when he was about 16. We know we are grateful for each day with him but I watch him decline almost daily. I am sharing his story now because he may not see another Birthday and it is because of him that I got into rescue and thousands of other cats have been helped not to mention so many more unwanted cats. I did eventually catch his mom but not before she had a second litter which I also was able to catch and find homes for. Momma was cared for by another neighbor and after several years, become a full time house cat again. The last I heard she was still alive and doing very well but that was about 4 years ago but she would have been 17 by then.

Our foster homes are full again and we can not take in more until we find homes for our current residents. We have some wonderful kitties. Some will make great lap warmers with winter upon us. They are all friendly, playful cats/kittens and we are looking for forever-indoor only homes. If you are looking to adopt or know someone that is please consider one of these beautiful kitties. If you are unable to adopt, a share would be greatly appreciated. You can visit our website at www.apurrfectstart.org to complete an application. Laverne and Shirley have a pending application but I am posting because they are just to cute to not to be appreciated. Aiden and Angus are not fixed yet but will be on the 19th and available after Thanksgiving.

Just want to share some kitties that are looking for their forever home. It has been a busy year so far as usually and we have been very fortunate to find so many of them loving homes. However, things have been slow this summer and these are our current kitties that are ready for new home. This year has been black cat season for us. We don't pick and chose what we rescue, we take in whatever is in need when we have space and each year it always seems to be a particular color. We all love the black kitties but it is true that they are the hardest to find their forever home. If you know of anyone looking to adopt, please share these wonderful cats and kittens. We do require an application, which can be complete on our website, www.apurrfectstart.org and you can learn more about each kitty pictured. Please share and thank you for taking the time to read and/or share.

A Purrfect Start is looking for a volunteer or two to help clean the adoption cages at the Petco in Westerville. It requires anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour a day, a couple of days a week. So if anyone would like to do two days or a couple of people could do one day a week, that would help a great deal. If you know of any in the area that would enjoy spending sometime with the kitties while they are waiting to find their forever home, please share and thank you.

THIS IS A COURTESY POST SHE IS NOT AT OUR FACILITY, BUT PLEASE REACH OUT TO [email protected] IF YOU ARE INTERESTED!

My wife and I live in the Columbus area, and we are needing to rehome our dog Rhea because my wife has pretty severe dog allergies and an immune deficiency, and her doctor says that she can no longer be around the dog as it is too detrimental to her health.

Rhea is a 14-year-old shepherd mix, around 55 lbs, and is spayed and up to date on all her vaccines. She is in good health other than having some arthritis, which she is currently taking medication for.

Rhea has currently been staying with friends while we have posted ads online looking for a forever home for, but so far we have not had anybody reach out to us, and our friends are only able to look after Rhea until the end of May, so it is somewhat of an urgent rehoming situation.

Rhea loves to take lots of naps during the day, but also loves to go for walks or just sit in front of a window and look outside. She can get along with cats and other dogs, but is happier as the only pet. As a senior dog, she does need to go out more frequently than a young dog, but is house-trained.

I am willing to continue to pay for food and any veterinary expenses that Rhea may need, and if at all possible, would like to still be able to visit Rhea (Rhea is the dog that helped me get through both vet school and residency, so I really want to do whatever necessary to help ensure that she has a comfortable remainder of her life).

I wanted to share some of our recent rescues and a little of their stories as we have had some sad situations but things are looking up for all of these. Terah showed up at one of our foster homes and she had been attacked by another animal. She was in pretty bad shape but she was so sweet. We worked to get her healthy and by the time she had recovered and was scheduled for her spay, we realized that she was to far along in her pregancy and cancelled her appoinment. (I know some will think we should have spayed her but she had already been through so much and although we do spay/abort, I do not like to do so on late term friendies. Once mom's hormones start to kick in, she will feel the loss.) She gave birth 3 days later to 6 very healthy kittens. We may have gotten her to healthy as she had produce more milk the six kittens could drink and developed mastitis. She was unable to nurse her kittens, which were bottle fed, but she cared from them in all the other motherly ways. She had to wear a special shirt for two months.

Elliot and Ziva came to us after their owner had passed away very unexpectently. There were 11 cats in all and family members took some and another rescue took a couple. There a few left. They were very lucky to have a friend of their cat mom that cared very much and wanted to make sure the cats all got to a good place. They are wonderful cats, maybe a little on the overweight side but great cats. Elliot needs a dental and he is scheduled for May 14th but Ziva is ready for a new loving home. We are very grateful to his caretaker as she has covered most of their vet care, including Elliot's dental.

Daphy showed up as a stray at a very nice family that wanted to help him but was unable to keep him. It is very unusual for us to have someone take care of all the vetting but this family did all of that for Daphy and he is just the sweetest boy. He seems to be very laid back.

Poor Romeo, I don't have his new pictures yet, this was taken when he first showed up at a families home. We had helped this family in the past with strays so they reached out to us. We did not have a foster home open but they agreed to keep him while he completed his vetting. We had scheduled an appointment for his neuter and on the way to the clinic, the family was hit by another car. The impact was so hard that it flipped and broke the carrier. They did not realize is when the stepped out of the car and Romeo escaped. Despite not having a car and being injured, they search for him but could not find him. He was posted on the lost and found site and as soon as the family could, they went back to the location and posted flyers. We were not certain what the odds were of finding him as he was not in a familiar area to him. The posters worked, two weeks later Romeo was found and returned to us. He made it to his next vet appointment and is a healthy, neutered boy now.

We have more cats and kittens not yet available for adoption but I will share them soon.

As always, thank you to those that support us and adopt from us, your truly are appreciate and this stories could not be shared without you.

Update: All three have been adopted.

Westen, Whisper and Whitlee are looking for their purrfect home. They came to us after a family had found them in their neighborhood. It was obvious they had been dumped as they were very friendly. They are about 5 1/2 months old and have completed their vet care. They will make a great addition to any family as they are very good kittens. They are FIV/leukemia negative, current on vaccines, flea and worm treated, microchiped and spayed/neutered. Can you please share to help us find them their new home. Thank you.
