Official Nashua River Watershed Association

Official Nashua River Watershed Association The Nashua River Watershed Association was founded in 1969 on the belief that every individual has the power to make a difference.

That belief led to the clean-up of one of the nation’s most polluted rivers, an internationally recognized success story.

How can we be facing drought conditions while also seeing some of the heaviest rainstorms on record?

The answer lies in the water cycle. As temperatures rise, more rain is falling in intense bursts that often run off the landscape instead of soaking into the ground. At the same time, warmer conditions cause water to evaporate faster, drying out soils and increasing drought risk. It's a reminder that when it comes to water, it's not just how much rain falls—it's when and how it falls.

If you’re lucky enough to spot a Bald Eagle nesting in the watershed this spring, give them space… and we mean space.

Bald Eagles are federally protected, and successful nesting depends on humans keeping a respectful distance. These powerful birds can have a strike force of up to 600 pounds and may react if they feel threatened near a nest site.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recommends staying at least 660 feet away from active nests — about the length of two football fields.

Enjoy observing, stay safe, and help protect our nesting eagle population by giving these incredible birds the space they need.

The Nashua River Watershed, located in the Central Region of Massachusetts, is now in a Level 2 Significant Drought, In spite of temporary relief from snowmelt in March, precipitation was well below normal in Massachusetts during April. This has not been enough to make up for the longer-term precipitation and groundwater deficits that have built up over the past two years: https://www.mass.gov/news/drought-conditions-worsen-in-several-regions-across-massachusetts.

Southern New Hampshire is still listed as Moderate Drought: https://drought.gov/states/new-hampshire

Reminder: We'll be exploring the fascinating world of New England caterpillars with The Caterpillar Lab this Thursday evening, May 14th at 7pm on Zoom. In a variety of sizes, colors, and textures, these intriguing creatures are generally unseen all around us until they metamorphize (an amazing process in itself) into the moths and butterflies we see. Use this link to register for this free program: https://www.nashuariverwatershed.org/caterpillars-of-new-england-celebrating-spring-biodiversity-virtual/

This program is offered by the Nashua River Watershed Association and The Caterpillar Lab as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area.

CLEAN WATER. RIVER SCIENCE. HANDS-ON LEARNING.

NRWA is grateful to the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation for a $15,000 grant supporting our water quality monitoring and environmental education programs serving New Hampshire communities across the watershed.

This support helps connect more students and families with their local river while advancing science-based river protection and stewardship.

Thank you, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation , for investing in healthy rivers and connected communities.

THESE CANOES ARE READY…

River Classroom® season begins today on the Squannacook River.

Very soon, these boats will be filled with students trading desks for paddles, heading out on the water to explore wildlife, plants, and the ecosystems that make our rivers so vital.

Through this hands-on experience, students don’t just learn about the river; they build a real connection to it.

This program is made possible through our partnership with Nashoba Paddler and the generous support of the National Parks Foundation (Open OutDoors for Kids), the Progin Foundation, and community members like you.

Together, we’ll bring more than 1,000 students onto the river this year.
