Troop 1 West Groton

Troop 1 West Groton Troop 1 is one of two Boy Scout troops in Groton, MA. We serve boys from ages 11 - 17 from Groton and surrounding communities.

Troop 1 was founded in the 1920s* and has been meeting continuously since then! We are not only one of the oldest but also one of the strongest troops in the Nashua Valley Council and take pride in being a "boy run troop”. This means that our Scouts plan and lead all troop activities. We currently have approximately 35 scouts ranging from ages 11 - 17 in our troop. Our program offers many opportun

ities for these boys to learn not only the "typical" scouting skills like camping, tying knots, etc., but also more current skills like rocketry, computers, digital programming, etc. Many of our scouts pick up hobbies or go onto careers in fields they first learned about from a merit badge class or rank requirement they had to complete. Troop 1 is a boy run troop which is active nearly year-round. We camp or have some form of activity every month of the year (winter included). In addition to some of our more local "car-camping" outings, some of our past activities have included whitewater rafting, rock climbing (indoor and outdoor), backpacking in the White Mountains, sailing, and we recently attended a camporee at the West Point Military Academy. The goal for our troop is to put the outdoors back into the scout. Community service is one of the tenets of scouting, so in addition to our outdoor activities, the troop is very involved in the community. Food drives, trash pick ups, manning the Groton Road Race 10K water stop, snow-shoveling for seniors in need, and displaying flags on holidays are just some of the ways we've tried to give back to our community that has supported us for so long. For more information about the troop, please see our About Us page. If you are interested in joining, or would like additional information about Troop 1, please contact our membership coordinator at [email protected]. Thank you, The Leadership and Scouts of Troop 1, West Groton

*Original Charter was 1920-something but right after WWII, "local folklore" says that Troop 1 had a female scoutmaster. Because female scoutmasters weren't recognized by the BSA until 1988, Troop 1 was unable to be accredited that year.

This is just a tickler reminder that the annual Troop 1 Boy Scout Yard Sale held at H&V field is coming Labor Day weekend.

For those not familiar with the event, the troop accepts item donations from the community which are then sold at our huge fun-in-the-sun yard sale on Labor Day in conjunction with the Fireman’s Muster. Proceeds from the sale support the scouts in the troop for the coming year. This is a great way to do an annual review of the items you are no longer using or have outgrown.

We gladly accept most furniture, clothing, toys/games, home goods, sporting equipment, craft items and any odds and ends that you might have. Unfortunately, for health and safety or for disposal reasons, we CANNOT take gas powered equipment, text books, mattresses, couches, electronics of any kind (including computers, printers, TVs, monitors), baby car seats, or strollers. Otherwise, all we ask is that donations be in good, resalable condition and be as complete as possible.

Event details for this year are:

Labor Day, September 3rd from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at H&V Field, Townsend Rd (between 225 & 119), W. Groton as part of the Firemen's Muster.

Donation Drop Offs:

Wednesday, August 29th from 5:30 PM to 8 PM at H&V Field

Sunday, September 2nd from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m (preferred) at H&V field

Due to limited storage, we ask that donations be made on these dates if at all possible. If not possible and an early date is needed, please contact us and we’ll see if we can work something out. If you have questions or you need a pick-up at your home please contact Valerie Maurice at 802-249-2715 or email at [email protected] and we'll try to accommodate as best we can.

Thank you,

The Scouts and Leaders of Troop 1, West Groton

Over the weekend of Oct. 27 - 29, nearly twenty scouts/adults from troop 1 participated in the annual Scout-O camp out and orienteering competition at the Nobscot Scouting Reservation in Sudbury, sponsored by the New England Orienteering Club. The goal of this competition is to teach scouts and adults the sport of orienteering and all of the skills that go along with that sport.

All of the participants participated on Sunday in the timed competition with our own duo of Nick M. and Kyle Z. winning 2nd place for scout teams on the Orange (most difficult) course. Congratulations to them and to the rest for a great weekend!!
