𝗨𝗦𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗕𝗜𝗔 (𝗦𝗦-𝟮𝟰𝟱) 𝗗𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻

Moored in the Manitowoc River, adjacent to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, World War II fleet submarine USS Cobia (SS-245) is a National Historic Landmark. Cobia is a memorial to all submariners and an icon of Wisconsin’s shipbuilding heritage. Built by Electric Boat Company of Groton, Connecticut, Cobia, a Gato-class submarine, is nearly identical to the 28 submarines built by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company from 1941 to 1945. The submarine is one of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s major exhibits, open to the public for guided tours and various overnight programs.

Annual maintenance on site is not sufficient to preserve this historic vessel over time, and a “haul-out” dry docking is required periodically.

This 4th of July, also known as Independence Day, marks the 248th birthday of the United States. This day is very significant in American history. It is the day the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and the United States officially became its own nation. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I would like to wish each and every one of you, your families and friends, a happy and safe 4th of July.

An endowment fund operates as a permanent financial asset that generates earnings through investments. The core principle is to preserve the principal amount (the initial endowment) while utilizing the generated earnings to fund various good causes.

This is the Fourth edition of the ONE PAGE - USSVCF Newsletter with a short video from the Brotherhood Fund Manager George Palmer and updates via links within the newsletter. This newsletter focuses only on the United States Submarine Veterans Charitable Foundation Brotherhood fund, and how this fund supports Submarine veterans and their families. USSVCF was created to support our Submarine veterans with the creation of multiple funds under a 501 (C) 3 charitable foundation. The USSVCF is a standalone fully certified charitable organization. Our next newsletter will be focused on the Legacy fund, and each subsequent newsletter will highlight additional funds.

𝗛𝗘𝗟𝗣 𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗞-𝟭𝟰 𝗠𝗘𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗟

USSVI’s Lehigh Valley Base is restoring a MK-14 Torpedo Memorial that was originally built in 1985 by the Lehigh Valley Chapter of World War II Submarine Veterans. The memorial was on the grounds of the Naval Reserve Center and was dismantled by the US Navy in 2023 when the Naval Reserve Center was closed.

The Lehigh Valley Base of USSVI has since obtained possession of the MK-14 Torpedo to restore it and rebuild the memorial in a new location. The memorial will be rebuilt at VFW Post 7293 in Whitehall, PA.

They have partnered with the USSVCF to help raise funds. The estimated cost for the memorial project is $20,000.00.
