Radar overnight shows that the early bird surge is on track for this weekend. 200 to 250 million birds are likely to be flying across the country the next 2 nights. Saturday night and possibly Sunday night will be the bigger migration nights in our local area. The early season surge is developing behind the cold front in Minnesota. There are also some birds migrating behind the 1st cold front moving through the mid Atlantic. These early season cool spells are leading to early opportunities for migrating birds to start their journey to the south. The peak of the fall migration is in September across the Great Lakes region. You can help by turning off those outdoor lights especially on high migration nights.

Peter Moe took these photos yesterday. Peter is currently Vice-President of Grosse Pointe Audubon but he is stepping down for academic reasons. He begins his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University next month!
Peter is having a good year. This Purple Sandpiper was his 900th new species to date.
These photos were taken when the PUSP was at the end of the Peninsula. This is where it was first reported. When I arrived it had moved to the area west of the Red No Littering sign. This is where I saw it. It is a chunky bird. Easy to ID next to the Least Sandpiper and Spotted Sandpiper. Then it flew back toward the tip.
These photos illustrate feeding behavior unlike most other Sandpipers. Eating vegetation like moss.
By 8 pm it was seen sleeping in the stone break wall offshore.
