Dear parishioners, friends and relatives,
Each year, in our work as Vincentians with the St. Ambrose Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, we help people whom we refer to as “neighbors in need.” Some, we have known for many years and they feel like friends to us. However, we are always excited to meet new neighbors. It’s a beautiful experience and one we are truly grateful for.
The mission of our conference is to help our neighbors meet emergency needs. We make every effort to help families avoid eviction by paying rents or power shutoffs by paying utility bills. We provide beds so people aren’t sleeping on the floor – a bad situation for school-age children and working parents who need their rest. We provide food when budgets won’t quite stretch to cover the ever-increasing cost of feeding families. We provide household items, appliances and the occasional medical supply. Often, our neighbors tell us we were the only agency that responded to their pleas for assistance. We take that responsibility very seriously.
So, once again, we are asking for your help. We could not do our work without donations from generous people like you. Our conference will be joining the 18th Annual Friends of the Poor Walk on Saturday, September 20, on Belle Isle. You can support us in a number of ways:

1) Make an online donation at https://www.justgiving.com/page/st-ambrose-grosse-pointe
(When asked to give a tip, choose “enter custom amount” and choose $1.50. This covers the cost of using the platform.) (The message on the site says “Liz Witherell is raising money for St. Vincent de Paul Detroit. Please do not be concerned. Liz Witherell is our treasurer who set up the page so her name appears on it.)

2) Mail a check, made out to “St. Ambrose SVdP Conference” to the address show below.

3) Walk with us. You will find additional details about the walk and a link to register at:

Thanks for your support and hope to see you at the walk!

Last weekend our SVdP conference held their annual Thanksgiving give away to our Neighbors In Need (NIN). With the help of our generous parishioners who filled the 120 boxes with suggested food items and Wolverine Packing Co for donating hams we were able to make a Thanksgiving dinner possible for neighbors!

We are so very thankful for our parishioners who are always willing to help us help our NIN.

Please join us this Saturday, September 21st for our annual St. Vincent de Paul - Fundraiser and Walk with our Neighbors, on Belle Isle.
9:00 a.m. Registration 10:00 Walk starts
Everyone is welcome for a leisurely 3 mile walk around the beautiful park with our team.

St. Vincent dePaul assists those who have emergency financial needs regardless of their religious affiliation. Ninety-five percent of the people we serve live in the city of Detroit. The real problem is poverty. Many of the people we serve are elderly and living on a Social Security income of about $750 a month. Many of our families are headed by working people and work for minimum wage or low wage jobs, often without benefits. If they have children, they may receive food support but no other help from the Department of Health and Human Services.

Last month our St. Ambrose Conference provided over $8000 to support our neighbors. Half of that amount was for housing assistance to keep 7 families from homelessness,$1800 in food vouchers for 30 people to help from going hungry, the balance for beds, utility bills, appliances, food and clothing. We can also provide bus tickets and an occasional gas card.

We are grateful to be able to help most of those who call us because of the generosity of our donors.

To make a donation, you can make your check payable to:

St. Ambrose SVdP is very sadden by the death of our dear friend and mentor. We have all learned from his actions and spiritual guidance on how to be a better servant to our neighbors in need. Roger will certainly be missed but our fond memories will live in our hearts.

Our SVdP Weekend was a big success!! Thanks to all who donated bags and boxes of clothing and household goods.
Our neighbors will appreciate the selection of items added to the SVdP stores.

A special thanks to our parish youth ( Corrina, Ciara, Charlie, Jordan, Abbey, Bethany, Graham, Lucan, Felix, Alice ) for assisting us through the weekend. They did most of the heavy lifting and transporting donations from trunks to truck. It is always a pleasure working with the youth of our community..

We are looking for a bunk bed for one of our neighbors in need.

Currently our Svdp conference is assisting a young mom with 3 children, ages 6, 4 and 2, and is 3 months pregnant. She is unable to work due to her high risk pregnancy.

A bunk bed will work well for the daughters due to the space in her apartment. If you can help, please leave a message.

Thank you for helping us help our neighbors.
