Another benefactor in our mission to fund Bottoms Up Diaper Bank. St. James Episcopal Church on Grosse Ile has a great history of hard work and fundraising for important programs. Their twice-annual rummage sales are amazingly successful, owing to the incredible hard work of the people involved.

With sorrow we announce the death of our founder, Gwendolyn Elaine McElwaney. Gwennie started this program ten years ago this past November, and has been a prodigious organizer and fundraiser and cheerleader in general. The Diaper Bank is determined to keep going, with the support of hard-working members of the Island and Downriver communities.

The family has asked that in her honor, donations be made to the diaper bank through the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church. We have been extraordinarily blessed to work with Gwennie and to call her a friend. We will miss her tremendously.

We lost our founder, Gwendolyn Elaine McElwaney, this past Sunday, February 15, and she is missed terribly by many friends. But we are rededicating ourselves to keeping her vision, now in it's eleventh year, alive.

This is a film we made about eight years ago to apply for a grant from Ellen Degeneres, and it is still a perfect description of our mission.

A New Year's Day resolution - to help moms and babies. Family resources are sorely stretched when a darling and much-loved new baby comes along. Here's a thumbnail sketch of the cost of diapers for the first four weeks of a newborn's life:

We find a need for clearer explanations on our practices, so we're posting this for information to potential applicants and for potential referrals from other community assistance programs:

We here at Bottoms Up do not process applications ourselves, as we just provide diapers for distribution through Fish & Loaves.

We buy and repackage for F&L all sizes Newborn through 6.

During most of the year, we can disburse 2 packages of 60 diapers for Newborn through 3. We give 1 package of 4-6. During the winter holiday months, November and December, we are able to give two packages of all sizes. The rest of the year, we have to cut back on sizes 4-6, because we do not have the financial reserves to buy those.

People from these seven Downriver communities are eligible to register at Fish&Loaves: Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor or Woodhaven.
