Happy Juneteenth! ๐ŸŽŠ On June 19, 1865, American forces arrived in Texas to announce and enforce the end of slavery. This came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the legal end to slavery. But because enslaved people were forced to work for another two and a half years after Lincoln passed the Proclamation, Juneteenth signified the first day of real freedom for Black communities across the United States. โœจ

A 126-year-old clubhouse isn't typically where you would expect to find cutting-edge technology. But that's exactly what Chamber Ambassadors discovered during their visit to the Grinnell College Golf Course. General Manager Shane Hart shared how the facility's newest additionโ€”a state-of-the-art simulator loungeโ€”is giving people another way to experience a game that has been a part of Grinnell since 1899.

Back in 1899, a group of Grinnell College professors returned from travels abroad captivated by a sport that was quickly gaining popularity around the world: golf. Convinced that people in Grinnell would enjoy it as well, they helped establish the Grinnell Golf & Country Club and bring the game of golf across the pond.

Golf has changed considerably since those early years, and the 1899 Lounge is one example of how technology is helping shape the modern game. The new simulator lounge allows golfers to practice year-round while also giving curious newcomers a low-pressure way to experience the sport.

โ€œThis space helps remove some of the uncertainty people often feel when trying golf for the first time,โ€ says Hart, General Manager of the Grinnell College Golf Course. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to know what clubs to use or even what to wear,โ€ he shared. โ€œItโ€™s a great starting point where people can simply discover whether they enjoy the game.โ€

Nearly a decade ago, Grinnell College became the sole owner and operator of the Golf Course, and funds that were previously held by the Grinnell Golf & Country Club were made available through a stewardship fund and facilitated by a steering committee, who helped take funds and allocate them to different uses for the benefit of the course. Additional investments have included an outdoor restroom, and an updated landscape plan (post derecho) to determine future land use opportunities.

When asked about the recent investment in the 1899 Lounge, Hart noted that dollars from the stewardship gift provided the starting point which then encouraged Grinnell College to invest further. โ€œThis symbiotic project has helped improve an underutilized space while broadening access and engagement for the sport as a whole,โ€ he said.

These modifications and improvements will help position Grinnell College Golf Course as a year-round destination. Local golfers can practice, take lessons, warm up before a round or play virtual versions of more than 50 courses from around the world. The space is also being used by area golf teams, first-time golfers, families looking for a fun activity to do together, and long-time golfers who may be experiencing mobility issues. โ€œWeโ€™ve already had several people who have had health challenges that prevent them from getting in a full round, but theyโ€™re able to hit a few balls in this simulated-experience,โ€ shares Hart.

One of the biggest surprises so far? Just how many people with little or no golf experience have become interested after just one round with the simulator! โ€œIt's opened the door for people who might never have stepped onto a course,โ€ Hart said.

Getting started is easy. Just reserve a time online at golf.grinnell.edu or call the Golf Course. For just $40/hour, the simulator experience can be shared with family and friends, by someone looking to improve their swing, or for someone just looking to try a new activity. The 1899 Lounge now provides a fun and flexible way to try the sport.

Hustling? The Grinnell Area Arts Council knows all about the grind โ€” in these upcoming months, the Arts Council will have launched at least one art exhibition a month, co-hosted a major summer musical theatre performance, and offered numerous art camps for local kids.

At the heart of the Arts Councilโ€™s hard work is Monica St. Angelo and her team of volunteers and staff. Together, they help bring art opportunities and public art to town, such as the wheat paste murals celebrating Edith Renfrow Smith, her family, and other Grinnellians back in 2024.

โ€œWhat the wheat paste murals did was get people excited about public art in a way that maybe they hadnโ€™t been before,โ€ shared St. Angelo with Chamber Ambassadors. โ€œAnd it was a lesson to us about how valuable that community connection piece is โ€” it had us thinking about continuing to pursue public art with local artists or involving area kids.โ€

So when St. Angelo had a chance to apply for a grant with the Iowa Economic Development Authorityโ€™s Creative Places Accelerator, she built a team and got creative. The grant, which provided money to five Iowa communities for public art projects, gave St. Angelo and her partners the chance to launch a new public art project called โ€œCreatures of Grinnell.โ€

Last summer, the Arts Councilโ€™s intern, Noelle Buehrer, collected drawings of creatures from Grinnell kids all over town, whether at Storytime Art in the Park, LINK programs, or even the Poweshiek County Fair. Then, a committee chose 15 of those creatures for Latitude Signage + Design to blow up into larger art installations.

The creatures are now being planted around Grinnell, with a large number concentrated downtown. During their big Kickoff Picnic on Sat., June 13 at the Grinnell Arts Center Lawn, the Arts Council will hand out interactive maps with the rough locations of the creatures. Plus, there will be free food and a creature parade! Through early July, the Arts Council will also display drawings of creatures from other area kids in their gallery.

โ€œWe ordered a lot of food, so please come by!โ€ laughs St. Angelo. โ€œBut we saw how people were excited about finding the Clarke Cats mini-murals, and so we wanted to do a scavenger hunt again with the creatures.โ€

At the picnic, everyone will receive a map with a rough location of the creatures. When you find one, youโ€™ll place a sticker (each one being one of the creatures) on your map of where you found it. These creatures will not be up permanently, but will be up for a long time, according to St. Angelo.

For those interested in art and engaging in more of their offerings, visit the Grinnell Area Arts Council website at https://www.grinnellarts.org/. Currently, the Arts Council team is responsible for Music in the Park on Thursday evenings and are helping to spearhead the upcoming production of โ€œA Year with Frog and Toad.โ€ Purchase tickets for the production online or at the Arts Council (926 Broad St).

โ€œI really feel strongly about the Arts Councilโ€™s economic impact on the community โ€” weโ€™re seeing public art brings people to towns and make them want to live in town, especially in rural communities,โ€ remarks St. Angelo.

Join her and her team at the Creatures of Grinnell Kickoff Picnic this Saturday!
