Disease-causing organisms and insects can be spread from uncleaned plant containers and pots to new plants potted in them.

Cleaning and disinfecting plant containers is an essential gardening routine. Either soak the containers in a 10% bleach solution for 10 minutes or wipe or spray the inside and outside of containers with 70% rubbing alcohol. More information: https://go.iastate.edu/MI0B8P

We got some much-needed snow in central and eastern Nebraska this week, so it's a good time to repost this helpful graphic, especially if you're wondering if snow actually provides useful moisture for trees.

As NSA Sustainable Landscape Specialist Sarah Buckley explains, many variables affect the ratio of liquid water to snow. For example, the warmer it is, the less snow is needed to make an inch of water. The colder it is or the windier it is, the more snow needed. It all comes down the size and number of ice crystals in the snow. A good rule of thumb is illustrated in this graphic: 12-14 inches of light, fluffy snow make about 1 inch of water, while 10-12 inches of heavy, wet snow is needed to make 1 inch of water.

So, bottom line: even after the snow melts, continue to water newly planted trees once a month or so (two gallons at a time) -- but wait until the temperature gets above freezing!

For the first time since 2021, the USDA has updated the Garden Zone Map. Make sure to see if your area has updated. Census is saying we are warming up some.

The USDA has just updated its map of gardening zones for the first time since 2012, sending American gardeners rushing to the Internet to find their zone. (Online is the only way to get the information, the days of printed maps are over.) For a lot of us, community gardeners included, it’s a big d...
