Extreme Heat and Your Health

Extreme heat can affect the body's ability to cool itself. This can lead to serious illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and people with chronic medical conditions.

Signs of heat-related illness may include:
• Heavy sweating
• Muscle cramps
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Fast heartbeat
• Confusion
• High body temperature

Protect yourself by:
• Drinking water throughout the day
• Spending time in air-conditioned buildings
• Wearing lightweight clothing
• Taking breaks if working outdoors
• Avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day
• Checking on family members, neighbors, and friends who may be at higher risk

Call 911 immediately if someone has a high body temperature, becomes confused, loses consciousness, or stops sweating in extreme heat. These may be signs of heat stroke, a life-threatening emergency.

Stay informed. Stay hydrated. Stay safe.

Did You Know? Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer and can be found in homes across Iowa.

We're excited to share an opportunity to help expand Iowa's radon workforce! The Iowa Radon Program is offering scholarships for individuals interested in becoming certified Radon Measurement Specialists and Radon Mitigation Specialists.

By increasing the number of qualified professionals across the state, we can help ensure that every Iowa county has access to trusted experts who can test for radon and reduce radon levels in homes, schools, and businesses.

This is a great opportunity for contractors, HVAC professionals, home inspectors, construction professionals, and others interested in adding valuable services to their business while making a positive impact on community health.
