Welcome to Herbicide-Free Grinnell! We are the Grinnell College chapter of the national organization Herbicide-Free Campus, which works to eliminate synthetic herbicide use on school campuses across the country. This movement was started on the UC Berkeley campus, and we are proud to be the first campus in Iowa to join the campaign. We are so excited for you to join our effort to make the green spaces at Grinnell chemical-free!
Why go herbicide-free?
Herbicides are toxic substances widely used in Iowa agribusiness, and ALSO on lawns and gardens all around the nation, INCLUDING our own Grinnell College Campus! They are destructive to the health of humans, animals, soil, and water. If you’re not convinced yet, join our page and expect more educational materials about the detrimental impact of herbicides and pesticides.
How you can get involved:
In order to drive a campaign against the use of synthetic herbicides on our campus, we need the support of our community! Eliminating herbicides means challenging current perceptions of aesthetic beauty and re-imagining the landscape of our campus. Therefore, the work we do as an organization will include both hands-on landscaping -- like incorporating natural prairie spaces in place of neatly groomed lawns-- and vocal activism--- like writing op-eds and petitions to urge Grinnell College to decolonize and detoxify our green spaces.
Whether you’d like to be an active participant, a supporter in solidarity with our movement, or are just curious to learn more about herbicide use at Grinnell, we hope you stick around! Like our page, email [hexterth] or [duffygra] to become a member, or come to the Org fair this weekend for more info.
