Hay, Hay, HAY!

Hay has been placed at Bailey and Fairview Elementary Schools!

Did you know placing hay has amazing benefits for your garden? It: 1) protects from the sun which prevents w**ds from sprouting, 2) as it decomposes, it gives nutrients right back to your soil, and 3) protects newly planted seeds from drying out by keeping moisture in the soil for longer!

Monica and Bella worked hard this week to plant seedlings and seeds in the Bailey and Fairview gardens! They even got to plant lavender in the herb Garden.

Make sure to stop by and look at some of their work! Signage will be coming soon to help identify what is what!

Comment down below how many capybaras there are on this post by Friday, June 19 to be entered to win a prize! The winner will be DMed. Good luck!

Today, Monica and Bella went to Storytime Art in the Park with Farmer Jordan from Grinnell Farm To Table. They picked fresh juneberries from outside the Drake Community Library and some fresh snap peas. Both were a huge hit during Art in the Park!

Be on the lookout for more updates and volunteer opportunities coming soon!

A little birdie told us that some new additions can be found at the Little Free Libraries near the Marvin, Bailey, Fairview, Summer St., and Grinnell Community Early Learning Center Gardens! These seeds are free to take and use at home! While you're there, take some time to enjoy looking at the gardens around you and seeing the possibilities for what will grow later this summer!

We hope you enjoy these surprises!

☀This summer, the Claude W. & Dolly Ahrens Foundation has 2 AmeriCorps service members who are excited to serve the Grinnell community! As the Giving Gardens get ready for the summer, we want to know what YOU would like to grow! We have open spaces in the Bailey and Fairview Gardens. As of now, we are planning on growing tomatoes, Roma tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, sweet and spicy peppers, summer and winter squash, zucchini, and broccoli between those two gardens.

👇Comment below if there are any fall plants/vegetables you would like to have and we’ll do our best to accommodate the most requested.

🌿 Did You Know? Grinnell Has 8 Giving Gardens!

The Giving Gardens will be growing all across the community, with eight garden locations throughout Grinnell. These gardens help bring fresh produce closer to where people live and create welcoming spaces for neighbors to connect.

Each garden helps support the shared mission of growing healthy food and strengthening our community.
Next time you’re out for a walk or drive, keep an eye out—you may spot one of our gardens in bloom! 🌱
