Members of Grimes American Legion Post 577 joined Grimes residents along 1st Street for the funeral procession for SGT Declan Coady as he passed through on the way to Iowa Veterans Cemetery. Proud to be a Veteran and Grimes resident!

Thank you to Grimes Lions Club for putting this together and providing the flags!

The Grimes Legion collaborated with the DCG Middle School 5th grade class for the annual Legion flag essay contest! The contest was open to any interested 5th grader, and aims to help elementary students develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the United States Flag. The contest also helps students learn flag etiquette and respect. Students created a 300 or less word essay, written in their own words, and reflect their perspective on what the U.S. Flag represents to them, and use facts from the United States Flag Code.

This year a total of 8 students submitted essays, split evenly between the Grimes Legion and the Dallas Center Legion Post 49. Violet C, Oliver P, Angus G, and Tilly L submitted essays to the Grimes post. Tilly L was selected as the winner and received a $100 Amazon gift card as an award. The other participants received a small American flag as a thank you for also submitting essays! Tilly's essay will now be entered into the Iowa Legion District 6 competition, then possibly on to the state contest! Read Tilly's essay below!
