Griffin Environmental Council The GEC is established as a volunteer board to advise the City of Griffin Board of Commissioners.

We also run cleanup events throughout the year and develop educational outreach programs for the community and environmental issues and litter control. An update about the progress of Heads Creek Reservoir- it will begin filling soon!

📌 Heads Creek Reservoir Update

The Heads Creek Reservoir remains closed for recreational improvements, including a facelift to the dam and a new spillway structure. The spillway and dam construction is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. Following an inspection by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, we will begin allowing the reservoir to refill over a 12-week period. The City will stock the reservoir with multiple game fish species per recommendations from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division. Once the reservoir is full and all water quality issues have been addressed, it will be reopened to the public for recreational use. Please expect the quality of fish to take some time to develop as the natural ecosystem of the reservoir develops over the next few years.

In the meantime, we encourage citizens to visit Still Branch Regional Reservoir, located at 4433 Hwy 18 in Molena, Georgia. For additional information on Heads Creek Reservoir, please contact Brandon Lewis, Director of Water/Wastewater for the City of Griffin, at [email protected].

✅ Heads Creek Reservoir Update

The Heads Creek Reservoir remains closed for recreational improvements, including a facelift to the dam and a new spillway structure. The dam was initially constructed in 1962. In 2019 and 2020, the dam was overtopped during a few heavy rainfall events. After temporary repairs and a close review by Georgia Safe Dams, it was determined that the dam would need to be addressed to protect people and property downstream of the reservoir. The project began in the fall of 2022 and is progressing, with an expected date to finish in the Spring of 2024.

During this time, we are taking the opportunity to scout locations for the placement of natural materials that will provide adequate grounds for spawning beds to improve the quantity and quality of fish. In the meantime, we encourage citizens to visit Still Branch Regional Reservoir, located at 4433 Hwy 18 in Molena, Georgia. For more information on recreation or directions to Still Branch, visit https://www.cityofgriffin.com/departments/water-wastewater/recreation.
