Imagine living next door to a neighbor who throws trash in the water , leaves the lights on all night, and casts a dark shadow over everything around. That’s Formosa Plastics, the neighbor no one can escape—from Vietnam to Texas, Louisiana, Taiwan, and Illinois.

For decades, Formosa Plastics, headquartered in New Jersey and Taiwan, has haunted communities, spilling toxic chemicals into water, poisoning the air, and devastating marine life. In Texas, and Louisiana, people have seen the chilling effects firsthand, as once-thriving ecosystems wither under Formosa’s shadow.

This Halloween, while we enjoy fictional frights, let’s not ignore the true horror lurking in our own neighborhoods. Stand with us and demand — before it’s too late.

Our oceans are becoming overrun with plastic waste, and yet the fossil fuel industry continues to push for an expansion in plastic production—further threatening our planet.

This reckless growth comes at a cost not only to our environment but to the communities already facing the highest levels of pollution. With ecosystems in crisis and the future of our climate at stake, the expansion of plastic production is a direct challenge to sustainable progress. 🌍

Now is the time for accountability and action. So we're calling on financial institutions like Bank of America & BlackRock to DEFUND plastic pollution!

Vietnamese Activists Urge Action on Formosa Plastics Disaster

On September 22, 2024, the International Monitor Formosa Plastics Alliance (IMFPA) sent a letter to Mr. Tô Lâm, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, ahead of his participation in the UN Summit in New York. The letter urges the Vietnamese government to take action for the victims of the 2016 environmental disaster caused by Formosa Ha Tinh Corporation, a subsidiary of Formosa Plastics.

The disaster devastated the coastal communities of Central Vietnam, poisoning the water, killing fish stocks, and crippling the local fishing industry. Though Formosa promised compensation, many victims have yet to see any real support. Thousands of legal claims were dismissed, and those who spoke out faced imprisonment.

IMFPA is calling on Vietnam to end retaliation, allow independent environmental surveys, and release imprisoned activists. Recent releases of prisoners of conscience give hope for reform, but more needs to be done to achieve justice for the victims and ensure long-term environmental protection.

RP Matthew Kennedy: This August in Livingston, NJ--during the on Wall Street--I was arrested alongside the legendary .woman and other comrades for blockading the entrances to the U.S. HQ of Formosa Plastics, a truly evil petrochemical corporation with a long track record of toxic pollution, environmental racism, union-busting, and human rights abuses from Texas and Louisiana to Vietnam and Cambodia.

Four of the activists who were arrested and charged with criminal trespass are taking our cases to trial. For too long, Formosa Plastics has criminally trespassed on working class communities, contaminating waterways, destroying ecosystems, dispossessing local fisherfolk, threatening to violate sacred ground, and polluting our climate. Facing the intertwining crises of climate change, plastic overproduction, and environmental racism, we're arguing that it's absolutely necessary to take direct action against corporations like Formosa Plastics who are most responsible for all this harm.

Join our movement briefing on Monday at 6pm CT to learn more, and to hear from some of the community leaders who have been fighting on the frontlines to for years.

Register at bit.ly/Formosa4Briefing.

Then on Thursday at 8am CT, plz join us in virtual court for our next pre-trial hearing, and wear red to demonstrate your solidarity!

STATEMENT FROM SHARON C. LAVIGNE ON HURRICANE FRANCINE
September 12, 2024, 8:00 AM

“We are grateful that no casualties have been reported following Hurricane Francine. Thank you to our first responders and public servants. However, the sense of loss and ongoing grief for our community weighs heavily on us. St. James Parish took a direct and unexpected hit as the eye of the storm shifted unpredictably over our community. The devastation, uncertainty, and hardship we now face have become painfully familiar to residents across the River Parishes and Southeast Louisiana.

Much like Hurricane Ida, these powerful storms are arriving faster, leaving us little time to prepare. In just a few hours, St. James received over ten inches of rain and Category 2 hurricane-force winds, compounding the struggles of communities already burdened by pollution and environmental injustice.

We are living in a climate emergency. Today, we are weary, and our resilience feels more fragile than ever. Please keep our communities in your prayers.”

— Sharon C. Lavigne, Founder & Director of RISE St. James Louisiana

🚨 57 million tons of plastic pollution are released annually, and the impact is staggering. Microplastics—tiny plastic pieces less than 5mm long—are infiltrating our oceans, air, and even our bodies.

Formosa Plastics, a global leader in petrochemicals and plastics production, plays a significant role in this crisis. As one of the largest producers of plastic worldwide, Formosa’s operations contribute to the growing environmental and health disaster we face today. Research from the University of Leeds shows that pollution is so pervasive it could fill Central Park to the height of the Empire State Building!

This isn’t just a Global South problem—Formosa Plastics' toxic legacy stretches across continents, with pollution affecting even the most remote corners of the planet. From the Mariana Trench to the peaks of Everest, microplastics are everywhere, and they’re in what we breathe, eat, and drink.

Plastics are increasingly recognized as hazardous, with the petrochemical industry facing escalating regulations. Scientists warn that by 2050, there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Formosa Plastics’ reckless expansion poses significant environmental risks.

We have NO FAITH IN FORMOSA. It’s time for Citi and other financiers to finally and support a sustainable future for all 🌱✊🏽
