Akanimo Cancer Foundation A 501 (c) (3) approved non-profit, created to raise awareness and support for childhood cancer In June 2007, our lives changed forever. This cancer was rare.

A beautiful baby came into our lives. He was everything a parent would want and lived a full life like most kids usually do.
10 years later, our lives changed again, this time in the other direction. Our boisterous young man was diagnosed of cancer 4 months after his 10th birthday. So rare it has never before been on file as diagnosed in our home country of Nigeria. So rare even doctors would rack their brains when they hear of the name- Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT)
We got thrust right into the chaos of the childhood cancer world. It is a world No parent would ever wish to be a part of And for us, this eventually meant practically fleeing with our dying child thousands of miles across the oceans…to the United States where, because of the level of care he received, we were able to have him with us for another 2 years. Childhood cancer is brutal and yet, everyday more than one child is diagnosed. Our Organization’s goal is to raise for awareness for childhood cancer -to let people know it can happen to anyone- and to raise support for the families that have their lives turned upside down in a twinkle of an eye and for the cross-section that eventually lose their children to the menace that is childhood cancer, to offer bereavement support and resources. Some societies are far ahead of others, that is why we also extend our support to indigent children in Nigeria through the hospitals in the hope to have at least, a decent remission rate. Supporting research is a big goal for our organization because it is only with more scientific research and breakthrough that we can hope to have more of our children in remission. Every delay can mean another day without the care a child needs.

The WHO identifies delayed diagnosis, difficulties obtaining an accurate diagnosis and barriers to treatment as contributors to poorer childhood cancer outcomes in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

Although we cannot eliminate every challenge overnight.But we can continue to educate families, strengthen awareness and advocate for accessible care.

Because when a child needs treatment, time matters.

Children can develop different types of cancer, including leukaemia, brain tumours, Retinoblastoma, lymphomas and solid tumours such as neuroblastoma and Wilms tumour.

Different cancers require different investigations and treatments. That's why accurate diagnosis matters. And Knowledge helps us understand the disease.

No child should face cancer alone.

For us as an organization , we believe every child facing this disease deserves to be supported and shown. They should not go through this journey feeling alone. And that is why we strive to give children a fighting chance.

Every parent wants to see their child grow, learn, and play without limits. But some childhood cancers, like retinoblastoma, can begin in the eyes and often go unnoticed until it’s too late.

But with Regular eye screening, early warning signs can be detected which can save a child’s sight and life.

Let’s break the barriers of fear, by creating awareness, and access because early detection saves lives.

Together, we can protect every child’s vision and give them a brighter, cancer-free future.

There are hospital visits, difficult decisions, financial pressure, fear, uncertainty and countless moments of hope.

Not every unusual symptom means CANCER. But when a symptom is persistent, unusual or getting worse, it deserves attention.

Parents and caregivers know their children. If something doesn't seem right, speak with a healthcare professional.

“These symptoms can have many causes. If something is persistent or unusual, seek medical advice.” WHO notes that early diagnosis involves awareness of symptoms by families and primary-care providers, followed by timely clinical evaluation and diagnosis.

Don't panic.
Don't ignore it.
Get it checked. 💛

Today, on world sight day, we are thinking about children's eye health and one childhood cancer that can affect the eye is retinoblastoma.

A white reflection in the pupil, sometimes noticed in photographs, can be a warning sign. Other changes such as a new squint should also be medically assessed.

A white pupil does not automatically mean cancer but it should never be ignored.

Early evaluation matters.
