GGC was proud to host the SC Genetic Counseling Society’s 2026 annual education conference in Greenwood last week! 🧬

The meeting brought together genetic counselors, laboratory and clinical professionals, researchers, educators, and students for a day of learning, collaboration, and connection. Events like these strengthen our professional community, encourage the exchange of ideas, and help advance genetic counseling and genetics care across South Carolina.

We’re grateful to the SC Genetic Counseling Society for its work supporting this amazing profession and to everyone who helped make this year’s meeting a success!

A surprising genetic connection could help explain some cases of inherited blindness.

New research led by GGC found that changes in the IDUA gene—best known for causing MPS I—can also cause retinitis pigmentosa, even without the typical features of MPS I.

Published today in The American Journal of Human Genetics (Cell Press), the findings expand our understanding of IDUA-related disease and may help improve diagnosis for people with unexplained vision loss.
