Based on the bright, funnel-shaped orange flowers and the long, protruding stamens, this is a Flame Azalea (Rhododendron calendulaceum).
These are iconic deciduous shrubs native to the Appalachian Mountains. Given the timing in mid-April, they are just beginning their peak blooming season.

We are honored to announce that Technical Sergeant Clarence E. Gibbs, is finally coming home after being reported Missing in Action (MIA) for eight decades. T/Sgt. Gibbs served bravely with the 368th Bombardment Squadron during World War II. He went missing on December 29, 1944, after his aircraft was hit during a bombing mission over Bingen, Germany. Though he survived the initial crash, he was later killed, and his remains have just been identified this year.

Please come out and show your support for T/Sgt. Gibbs. He will be arriving at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport Friday, July 18, 2025 at approximately 7:00 PM and will be es**rted to Gray Funeral Home of Clinton. Patriot Guard Riders will lead the es**rt along with Law Enforcement down I-385. We kindly ask that our local community show your support by lining roadsides and bridges.

T/Sgt. Gibbs will remain at Gray Funeral Home of Clinton until he is laid to rest on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Pine lawn Memory Gardens with Full Military Honors. We invite family, friends, and the community to attend his Graveside service to honor his sacrifice for our freedom.

Let’s come together for a final salute to T/Sgt. Clarence E. Gibbs and remember the bravery he showed for our country.
