Last night we said goodbye to our sweet Lint. đ¤đ
When we rescued Lint, his front right leg was in really bad shape. He had a severe infection in the joint that his previous farm had tried to treat, but nothing was helping. We took him straight to New Bolton, where we were given two options â months of aggressive treatment that would have him in and out of the hospital with no guarantee it would work, or amputation. We chose amputation.
And Lint never looked back. He figured out life on three legs and honestly didnât seem to care that he was a little different. He ran around, ate grass, demanded food and did all the normal sheep things right alongside everyone else.
And somewhere along the way, he found Bernie. â¤ď¸
Bernie was Lintâs best friend in the entire world. Those two were always together. Where you found one, the other was usually close behind. Bernie never cared that his buddy only had three legs.
Unfortunately, after carrying the extra weight for all this time, Lintâs remaining front leg just couldnât support him anymore. We knew there wasnât a way to keep him comfortable long term, and last night we made the decision to let him go peacefully.
These are the days that make rescue really, really hard.
But when I think about Lintâs life, I donât want to think about the leg he lost or the leg that eventually couldnât carry him anymore. I want to think about everything that happened in between. He got grass, sunshine, snacks, friends and so much love. He got to just be a sheep. And most importantly, he got a best friend who absolutely adored him.
Bernie is missing him a lot today, and watching him look for his buddy might be one of the hardest parts of saying goodbye.
When we bring these animals home, we canât promise them forever. We can only promise them that while theyâre here, theyâll be safe, theyâll be loved, and when their bodies tell us theyâve had enough, weâll love them enough to listen.
I would choose the amputation all over again if it meant giving Lint the life he got to have afterward.
Rest easy, Linty. đ¤ I hope wherever you are, youâve got four good legs again.
Weâll take care of Bernie for you. â¤ď¸đ
