The Index-Journal featured our Wreaths Across America ceremony on the front page of The newspaper. We appreciate the coverage, and hope that the visibility continues to raise awareness of this important program to honor veterans. Thank you, Helen Nazzaro, for your vision to bring this program to Greenwood. WAA in Greenwood would not have been possible without your leadership.

The wreaths are coming! Join us at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9, for the delivery of wreaths for our Wreaths Across America ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 17.

On this Friday (Dec. 9), we are asking community residents to line up on the sidewalk, along Highway 72, in front of NewSpring Greenwood at 10 a.m. to welcome the truck driver whose company, E.W. Wiley in North Dakota, has donated its truck and driver for this important event honoring veterans.

We’re asking for a police es**rt to welcome the truck. Bring your flag and cheer on the truck driver and our wreaths!

Those of us on the Wreaths Across America Committee last year were so thrilled to see truck driver Bill Correll arrive with the WAA truck.

Share the excitement with us as we honor Greenwood's heroes!

This is why we place the wreaths -- to honor the memory of America's men and women who have served our nation throughout our history! It is also a gift to their families -- to let them know their loved ones are never forgotten.

Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Ninety Six, the childhood church attended by renowned educator, minister and civil rights leader Benjamin E. Mays, will be one of the locations for Wreaths Across America in Greenwood.

This brings to 12, the number of cemeteries in the Greenwood area which will have veterans' graves recognized.

Old Mt. Zion Baptist Church was founded in 1861 by a group of enslaved people. The church building was re-established in 1880 after a fire destroyed the previous location. Mays, who was born in 1894 in the Epworth area of Greenwood County, attended the church with his family before going on to further his education at the High School Department of South Carolina State College and then at Virginia Union University, Bates College and the University of Chicago. He was inaugurated as the sixth president of Morehouse College in 1940, a post he held until 1967. His distinguished career was noted by his mentoring of civil rights leaders, including Martin Luther King Jr., and serving as an advisor to several U.S. Presidents. He died in 1984.

Mays' family members are buried in the historic church cemetery and a stained-glass window in the church honors the family.
